“How long?” I demanded, ignoring his remark. “How long have you been working for Micah?”
“Long enough” He snarled. He seemed so different. Not like himself. But he was himself; everything else had been a lie.
“How could you? How could you betray us like this? After everything we’ve been through.”
“It was surprisingly easy.”
“Easy. You’ve turned your back on everything we’ve been taught. Everything we believe in.” I wanted to scream, but I still didn’t want to draw attention. There were some things I still needed to know. Like why?
“Ha! Everything you believe in. You think I wanna sit back and wait until a bunch of pathetic hunters come and slaughter me. To live my life and exist in a half life. When I can live like a king. Not a chance, give me this any day.”
“That’s why you’ve been staying here so much.” I realised. “Why you won’t come out during the day. You can’t!” He’d done it. He’d actually taken a life, maybe more than one. He truly was evil.
He sneered. “The price to pay for immortality.”
“The price you will pay, will be your life. We’ll never let you leave here alive. I won’t let you.” I slowly started to walk towards the cabinet, on the wall. Step after step. The shock of realising that someone I believed to be good was turning into rage.
“As vampires we were once powerful and strong. People who knew of us feared us. Feared what they didn’t know and because of that we were in control. Look at us now. We exist like this, living in groups, afraid of hunters.” He spat “Hunters, who are no more special than anybody else, except that they are trained to kill us. And we let them. We could obliviate them, but we don’t and I’m sick of it”
“We are not afraid of them.”
“Oh, no. Then why is it that the Death Walkers are working with them? It’s because you’re all afraid of them. But not me.”
“I am not afraid of them. I and the rest of the Death Walkers will be working with them because Micah has to be stopped, not because we fear them, it’s the right thing to do. I know it, Alana knows it, Quintenn knows it, and we all know it.” I shook my head. “I thought you believed that.”

“Well, I don’t. And I’m not the only one. There are many, both here and around the world, that share Micah’s vision. A vision where we are once again in charge”
“There have always been vampires who kill and murder. That will never change. What makes you so sure this is different in anyway?” I interrupted.
“It is, you’ll see.” He smirked. “I think you’d like it. There is nothing better than the feeling you get watching someone take their last breath, knowing you hold all the cards. Of knowing that you are in control.”
“You” I raged “are disgusting. I don’t want any part of that. Never. And if you think that for one second, I’m gonna let you walk out of here, you're out of your mind!”
“Too bad. We could have had fun.” James raised his head and his eyes went from being his normal colour, to having a dangerous glow. He bared his fangs and sprang at me.
I gripped the knife that sat atop the cabinet and twisted so that instead of hitting me James collided with the cabinet.
He let out a shriek and started to circle me, just like we did during training. Only this wasn’t training and only one of us was going to walk away alive.
I pushed aside all the thoughts I had of him, flirting with Claudia and as my friend, and thought of him only as my enemy. I had to find his weakness and use that. I knew he was overconfident and that he wasn’t as fast as other vampires I’d faced.
As we circled each other, I realised that he would be doing the same thing. I hoped he couldn’t find my weaknesses as easily as I could his.
Again, he lunged at me and again I dodged him. He grabbed my arm and I flung him backwards. He stumbled a bit but was otherwise unmoved. He was strong; I could feel it in his grip.
“He has plans for you. Micah.” He smirked.
“What?” I stumbled in surprise and he landed a hit smack square in my chest, sending me backwards and with a crash, into a table.
Jumping to my feet, I felt wetness on my shirt and looking down, saw I had a gash on my stomach. I panted. Oh well, I thought. As a vampire I healed fast. Soon enough there wouldn’t be anything there except the tear in my shirt. It was a shame too; this was one of my favourite shirts.

“You think that even after all this time, he’d let you go?” he laughed. “He’ll never let you go.”
Angered, I kicked out at him. He caught my ankle and twisted. I was faster than him and thought ahead. As he twisted, so did I. I turned my body in the air, around and up, so that when he released my ankle I ended up landing on the ground in a crouch.
I extended my foot and kicked his legs out from under him, but he rolled and was soon on his feet once again. I jumped up and he grabbed for the knife in my hand.
We struggled and he wrestled it from my grip. With a flick of his wrist he sent it flying across the room and into the wall on the other side. In the same motion I pushed my hand up and was rewarded to hear a crack. I had broken his nose. Blood poured down over his shirt and with a roar of rage and pain, he backhanded me across my jaw.
“Bitch!”
Oh, that was it. I punched him, full force into his ugly face and bolted across the room, with him hot on my heels.
By this time the noise we had been making and our absence had been noticed and everyone was flocking into the room. Claudia was standing there, open mouthed as well as Frank Morgan, Logan and most of the other hunters. They all entered the room in the same minute it took both James and I to reach the other side of the room.

I was just the tiniest bit faster and as my foot hit the wall, I did a back flip, scooping up the knife at the same time. I flipped around and it one fluid motion, sank the knife into James’s heart.
He let out a gurgle and sank to his knees. Blood poured from his mouth, and he gasped his last breath as I pulled the knife out.
I stood there panting and gasping for breath before I turned and looked at all the shocked faces staring at me. I knew I was covered in blood, both mine and his, and that I was a mess. No one had any idea what had happened and why, and I wasn’t in the mood to explain.
I walked towards Logan. He followed me with his eyes until I was standing before him, all eyes on me. “There was your snitch.” I said before I thrust the bloody knife into his hands. He simply looked down at it until I turned and walked towards the door, opening it quietly.
“Roxi. Oh my God. What...” Claudia was speechless, staring down at James’s lifeless body. “Where are you going?”
I turned to face her one last time before slamming the door behind me.
“Church!”
