Destined - Chapter 44- Facing the Truth (chapter 45) by Rachel
description:
There’s a line between good and evil, but what happens when that line is blurred?
Roxi was a normal teenager up until two years ago when fate left her no choice but to become a vampire. Necessary for her to live; it wasn’t something she chose. Does that make her evil? Roxi doesn’t think so. With that choice taken out of her hands, she made the only one she could let herself make. She chose not to give into her nature, but to rise above it.
Despite having to hide, who and what she now is from the people who matter most, Roxi was living her life as best she could. That was until someone from her past resurfaced. Someone who wants Roxi to take a different path than the one she chose. Someone who won’t let her go.
Now Roxi is left with no choice but to work alongside her natural enemy, the very people who hunt her kind- Vampire Hunters. Embarking on a shared mission proves difficult as hunters and vampires clash. They say keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but how do you accomplish that when your enemies no doubt want you dead?
Throw in a supposed destiny that Roxi doesn’t believe in, and a hunter named Logan who may be more than he seems, life’s getting complicated. As Roxi fights to prove she’s more than the hunters think she is, Logan’s learning that not everything is black and white, and soon Roxi begins feeling things for him she knows she shouldn’t.
But when tragedy strikes and Roxi’s world is shattered, she must decide whether to give up, and lose all she is, or fight to complete the mission. Suddenly the stakes are higher, as the realisation that maintaining what’s left of her already broken world may come at a price. One that Roxi’s not sure she’s willing to pay, or even if her heart will allow her too.

He glanced up momentary and nodded at me, his eyes dark, before turning his attention back to what he held in his hands.
Taking another steadying breath, I turned and shut the door before heading in his direction. Halfway to where he was sitting, I happened to notice what he held and I stopped short. “Where did you get that?” I asked, shocked.
In his hands he held my gold cross, on a new unbroken chain. The metal glistened in the light as both our gazes looked down at it. His lips were flat, as was his voice. “I picked it up that day in the church,” he told me, looking up and holding my gaze. His voice gentled. “I just haven’t found the right time to give it back to you.”
I said nothing, still looking at him.
“Roxi, I really don’t want to argue, but about before, we-” Logan continued.
“No, let me speak” I interrupted, holding my hand up, signalling for him to stop and taking an uneasy step forward. “If I don’t say this now, I’ll chicken out and I probably never will.”
He waited for me to continue, with an expression on his face that was comfortingly familiar to me. His eyes were patient, but at the same time I could see the curiosity that burned behind them.
“You were right,” I told him. “With the things you said. Well....” I paused and bit my lip. “About some things anyway. I’m not coping, at least, not how I probably should be.”
He continued to stay quiet, not interrupting, so I continued. “But you have to understand,” I said slowly. “I’m dealing with this the only way I know how. I’m trying to hold my head above water and just get by.” I held his gaze and my voice was quiet, yet serious. “If it’s feels like I’m pushing you away, I’m not. Or not intentionally.”
I walked over and rested my elbow on the dresser, not looking at Logan, rearranging my thoughts before turning back to him. I felt hesitant in telling him my weaknesses. However I knew what had to be said. “Logan, I’m worried. Everything is so uncertain and it’s too hard for me to think about what’s going to happen when this is finished. I’ve always had the covenant, the entire time I’ve been a vampire, and now they’re gone,” I said. “There are other vampires out there, but I don’t know them and it’s not the same. I’m not ready to consider that I’m going to have to face the future alone.”
Logan’s eyes narrowed, and when he spoke he emphasised each word. “You are not alone,” he said, slowly. “I’m here.”
I let out a breath. “I know you’re here.....but Logan, I’m a vampire. You’re not; there are some things you can’t ever possibly understand.”
“I can try,” he responded.
I smiled, knowing how hard he would try. I shook my head, knowing that our differences didn’t matter to me, and obviously not him. But that wasn’t the point now. I needed to take another direction in our conversation. “Micah took them from me; he left me to face this alone. He’s the most dangerous person out there and he has an endless amount of vampires who are willing to help him. He still has his plan....” My voice shook and I took a deep breath. “I’m not quite sure that I’m ready to face what that is.”
Logan sighed and looking frustrated, stood up. “And what.... do you mean by that?”
I instantly regretted that last remark, thinking that perhaps it was something I should have kept to myself. I let out a breath.
“Roxi,” he said sharply.
Giving up, I looked across into his blue eyes, the only eyes that had every looked into the very depths of me. “We don’t know exactly what Micah’s plan is, we never have. But we knew he had one for the covenant, and look how that turned out,” I shook my head and made my voice serious. “He told us he had one for you hunters as well. After everything I’ve already lost, I can’t think about losing....”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he cut in. His voice was icy and deadly calm. He spoke as though there was nothing that could change that fact. “Not now.....Or ever,” he told me, decided. The expression he held on his face and that danced in his eyes left me breathless. And unable to answer, even if I’d had a possible response, which I didn’t.
Holding his gaze, I felt a warm feeling wrap itself around me and in that moment I forgot everything I’d wanted to say, everything I’d been worried about. The intensity in the room was extensive and all I could think about was him. And the way he made me feel, in a way no one ever had. Not before now, before him.
Eventually I had to tare my eyes away, afraid I’d forget how to breathe. “I believe you when you say that,” I whispered. “I really do. But Micah, I....” I stopped and bit my lip, before continuing. “I just hate the thought that he may win.” And I was beginning to believe that he may find a way to do just that.
Logan was nodding, absorbing what I said. “There are a lot of ways he can beat us Roxi,” he told me, beginning to walk over to me. Each step was slow and careful, as he held my gaze. “If he kills us he wins. If he gets away he wins,” he paused, shrugging. “If we give up he wins.” Once he reached me, he moved so that he stood behind me. “There are many ways he can beat you in particular. And there are a lot of things he can take from you.”
I stood, unmoving, feeling his fingertips graze my skin, brushing my hair over my shoulder and out of the way. “If you let him,” he breathed near my ear. I felt the coolness of the chain touch my skin as he slipped it around my neck. “Don’t let him take who you are Roxi. Don’t ever let him, or anyone else for that matter, make you question yourself or your beliefs.” I heard, and felt, him clasp the chain behind my neck and his hands slid to my shoulders, lingering there. “Or the things that make you, you.”
I brought my right hand to my throat and griped the cross that once again hung there. I held it in my fingers lightly, the cross that was a symbol of everything I believed. “You’re right,” I whispered, so low it was hardly audible. Of course he was right, I thought dryly, he usually was. I smiled to myself. Not that I’d ever tell him that, as if his ego needed another boost.
Logan’s hands still sat on my shoulders and when he bent down and spoke in my ear, I couldn’t fight the tingle that ran down my spine. “Do you remember when I told you there wasn’t anyone I needed?”
“Yes,” I replied. “You told me there was no one you cared about.”
“Right,” he agreed. “That’s not the case anymore,” he whispered softly against my skin, as he brought his lips down and lightly brushed a kiss on the back of my neck.
My heart jumped and started beating a million miles an hour, as I spun on my heel to face him, my instincts and feelings for him taking over. Almost in the same motion I leaned into him and kissed him on his lips. Hard.
He reacted automatically, as though it was the most natural thing in the world, cupping my face with his hands and kissing me back with as much force as I’d kissed him. Since the Manor fire I hadn’t really kissed Logan and it was only now that I began to realise how much I still wanted to. How much I wanted him.
I twined my arms around his neck and his hands slid down from my face, over my ribs, until he griped my shirt on either side, crushing it in his fingers. I was as close to him as I could get and yet, I wanted to be closer. My body was pressed right against his, and he stumbled backwards, still kissing me, into the dresser. We kissed a moment longer, his back resting against the side of the dresser. Our kisses were strong, furious and desperate, mixed with a sweetness and a tenderness that I couldn’t fault. It was everything rolled into one and it was everything I’d never knew I’d wanted until I’d met him.
After a bit of time Logan turned us around and wrapping his hands around my waist, lifted me ever so slightly, perching me on the edge of the dresser so that I didn’t have to reach up to him. He continued to kiss me. Everywhere. He kissed me everywhere and everywhere at once. The softness and tenderness of his lips warmed me, as he kissed my lips, my cheek, my jaw, my shoulder, my neck.
My arms were still locked around his neck, as my fingers flicked through his soft, fine hair. My entire body was tangled around him, and I held him to me tighter. Kissing him, and being close to him gave me a feeling that I felt all the way down to my soul, and I loved it. I loved him!
All I could think about, all I wanted to think about was him. The way he made me feel when he kissed me. When he ran his hands along my body. When he-”
Tap, tap, tap.
The quiet noise at the door broke through and we both paused, becoming still. For a second I held my breath as we waited, and then I opened my mouth, speaking at a whisper. “Logan shouldn’t we get the d-”
“Shhh,” he silenced me. His lips went back to gliding over my jaw. “Maybe if we ignore them, they’ll go away,” he mumbled.
They didn’t. Tap, tap, tap, on the door. This time it was louder, the person on the other side undoubtedly getting frustrated. It was followed by a muffled voice, we both knew. “Logan, man, I know you’re in there. We gotta talk.”
It was Greg.
Logan sighed. “Hang on. Give me a sec,” he called over his shoulder, glancing away and then back.
His hands rested on either side of me, on top of the dresser and he leaned forward so that we were eye level. “You know one of these days we won’t be interrupted.”
I smiled. That was a common thing for us, the interruption, and the disappointment was there each time. I gave him a long smile. “I’m looking forward to it.”
He chuckled, his eyes crinkling. They sparkled as he stared back at me, before he leaned close and whispered in my ear. “Soon. Very soon. This will all be over soon and then it will just be you and me. No interruptions.”
I giggled, surprising myself and I felt my cheeks grow hot as he kissed one side. My heart thundered in my chest and my grin grew to a point where it hurt my face. I liked the thought of it just being he and I. I liked it every much.
I closed my eyes, basking in the actual happiness I was feeling. Even though there was the tiniest thought in the back of my mind that said it was too early to be happy like this. That it was too soon. But I’d known the covenant, and the last thing they would have wanted would be for me to be miserable. I couldn’t betray their memory by living in the past. I had to move forward. I owed them that. I sighed, coming to realise that I was actually starting to heal. It would be a slow process, but I would get there. With help, and in time. I opened my eyes and looked at the side of Logan’s head as he kissed me again, we had time.
Logan nuzzled my neck as another loud thud echoed off the door. This time it sounded like it was Greg’s fist.
“Come on man,” he groaned. “Open the damn door, or I’m gonna break it down!”
“Alright, alright,” Logan said, rolling his eyes. He took a step back from me, allowing me space to get down. “I’m coming,” he called. He offered me his hand, and I took it. I hopped off the dresser, smiling and brushing my shirt. I ran my fingers through my hair, hoping it wasn’t messy and looked at Logan.
He was grinning at me, lighting up his whole face and I grinned back. We didn’t say another word as we walked over to the door. We tried to look indifferent as we opened it. Aside from the fact that it was Greg, and he knew us both better than any other hunter, I’m sure our heavy breathing would have been a dead giveaway.
He gave us an odd look, but didn’t say anything about our obvious state. He turned and leaned towards Logan. “Man, you should come with me,” he said.
Logan looked taken back. “What’s going on? What is it that you were ready to break the door down for?”
Greg shook his head. “Honestly, I don’t completely know, but there’s things going on that I think you need to know about.
“I don’t understand,” Logan said, glancing at me briefly.
I shrugged, having no idea what Greg was going on about.
“There’s a meeting between everyone down in the barn,” Greg mentioned to Logan.
Logan’s eyes widened, and then narrowed. When he spoke his voice was cold. “No one informed me of this.”
Greg nodded slowly. “Exactly,” he said carefully.
Logan seemed to understand something in what Greg was saying, and moved towards the door. He glanced at me as he passed through the door way. “I need to look into this,” he said apologetically. “I’ll be back soon.” He waited until Greg started down the hallway, before leaning in and brushing a kiss on my cheek.
I stood in the door way, feeling slightly confused. What had just happened and what was going on? Something was up, I could feel it in my bones, but surely it couldn’t be anything overly bad. Right? I mean, what could be going on that Logan wasn’t aware of. He was informed of everything. If something was going on he’d have known about it.
He hadn’t.....
