Destined - Chapter 39- I have to do something, or i'll crumble (chapter 40) by Rachel
description:
There’s a line between good and evil, but what happens when that line is blurred?
Roxi was a normal teenager up until two years ago when fate left her no choice but to become a vampire. Necessary for her to live; it wasn’t something she chose. Does that make her evil? Roxi doesn’t think so. With that choice taken out of her hands, she made the only one she could let herself make. She chose not to give into her nature, but to rise above it.
Despite having to hide, who and what she now is from the people who matter most, Roxi was living her life as best she could. That was until someone from her past resurfaced. Someone who wants Roxi to take a different path than the one she chose. Someone who won’t let her go.
Now Roxi is left with no choice but to work alongside her natural enemy, the very people who hunt her kind- Vampire Hunters. Embarking on a shared mission proves difficult as hunters and vampires clash. They say keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but how do you accomplish that when your enemies no doubt want you dead?
Throw in a supposed destiny that Roxi doesn’t believe in, and a hunter named Logan who may be more than he seems, life’s getting complicated. As Roxi fights to prove she’s more than the hunters think she is, Logan’s learning that not everything is black and white, and soon Roxi begins feeling things for him she knows she shouldn’t.
But when tragedy strikes and Roxi’s world is shattered, she must decide whether to give up, and lose all she is, or fight to complete the mission. Suddenly the stakes are higher, as the realisation that maintaining what’s left of her already broken world may come at a price. One that Roxi’s not sure she’s willing to pay, or even if her heart will allow her too.

Chapter 49
A tiny noise managed to pull me from the unconscious and I woke with I start. I sat up and looked across the room at Logan, as he placed a stack of clothes and a sliver thermos on the dresser. I was wrapped in the blanket that had been on the bed and I felt restricted. I pulled it down so that it sat around my waist, and gave me more room to move.
He made a face as he looked back at me. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“It’s alright, I was...” I paused and shook my head, as he watched me. “Nothing. Don’t worry.” I wasn’t sure why, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to talk about my dream. Not then. “What time is it?” I asked, glancing around for a clock. There was none, but I could see sunlight streaming in through the window behind me.
“A little after eleven,” Logan answered, walking over and sitting down next to me on the bed. As he did, I registered that he was freshly showered, his hair still slightly wet, however clean, with all traces of ash gone. He was wearing fresh clothes, and as I looked it was easy for me to see that they were his clothes.
He made me feel like a mess. I stretched and indicated his clothes, a pair of jean and a black t-shirt. “Where’d you get clean clothes? I thought all your stuff were inside the Manor.”
His lips curved up at the edges. “I had them in the Lancer. Being a hunter I never know when I’m gonna have to up and leave. I often have to leave some of my stuff behind.” He shrugged. “I always try to keep a few extra pairs of clothes in my car.”
I thought about that for a second, happy to be thinking about anything other than what was currently going on. “So the Lancer’s your car?” He was always driving it, yet I’d never asked him if he owned it. I thought of my own car and realised it had most likely burned in the Manor’s garage. It didn’t bother me. It was gone anyway, beside’s....it was just a car.
“It’s a rental. Again, I never know when I’m gonna have to just take off. It’s so much easier to just rent cars instead of actually owning them.” He laughed. “I can’t count the amount of cars I’ve had to dump in the past. It’s better when you don’t own the car yourself.” He moved so that he lay on his back on the bed, beside me and rested his hands behind his head.
I took in what he was saying. “I didn’t know that,” I told him, biting my lip.
He gazed up at me, his eyes gentle, but his face smiling playfully. “There’s a lot of things you don’t know about me, Rox.” His eyes sparkled when he spoke, and it was easy enough to forget about what was going on and how bad I felt.
I found myself smiling back at him, and in spite of the hollow feeling I had in my heart, I actually felt lighter. He had that effect on me. “Will you tell me what they are?”
He nodded, not losing the smile on his face, although I saw something darker in his eyes. “Yes. Whatever you want to know.”
I sighed, knowing there was a lot about him I wanted to know, yet never knowing if the right chance would come to talk about it. With everything that was going on, I knew now wasn’t the chance to take a walk down memory lane. I looked over at the pile of clothes sitting atop the dresser. “Are they the clothes Miriam said she would get for me?”
“Yep,” he answered, looking over at them. “She gave them to me when I passed her desk. She said that she knocked and knocked, but you didn’t answer. I guess you were too far out of it.” He looked back at me. “Did you sleep well?”
“Honestly?” I asked, crossing my legs. “Not so much, but it doesn’t matter. Losing sleep is the least of my worries. Still, thing’s will get worse before they get better, right?” I quipped.
Logan took a breath and pulled himself up, gazing at me, an unreadable expression on his face. “Right, things always get worse first. Speaking of which,” he swallowed, looking uncomfortable. “There’s something you need to know and something I have to ask.”
I looked back at him, waiting for him to continue.
“I’m not sure if you know but hunters work a certain way and we have certain things we do when we get our mark. We’re set in our ways and routines and even though the covenant wasn’t a mark, we still want to keep track of the vampires that died.” He paused. “There were a lot of vampire lost in the fire, Roxi and it’s going to take quite a bit to identify them. We’ve called in some of our specialist contacts.”
I recalled hearing the hunters talk at the Manor site. “They’ll identify the bodies, won’t they? Are they hunters too?” I asked him.
“Yes, they’ll identify the bodies and let any family the vampires had, know of their deaths. And yes, they are hunters. It might surprise you, but sometimes hunters specialise in certain fields that allow us an easier job of hunting.”
“What about you?” I interrupted.
“Hmm? Oh, I’m a hunter. Just a hunter,” he answered. His lips were a flat line and he seemed a million miles away, trying to figure out how to tell me these things. “Some of the vampires are going to be hard to identify because they’re so old, and we’re gonna need all the help we can get.”
I felt my stomach drop at his words. “From me?” I asked, not really needing to ask, but still feeling I had to.
Logan reached across the bed and picked up my hand. He curled his fingers around mine, however his gaze dropped and he looked down. “Yes. You knew them best,” he said quietly.
I swallowed, my throat feeling tight. “Alright.” I told him, knowing that, not only did I really have no choice, but it was the right thing to do. Also I knew myself; I’d loose it if I had nothing to do that would help keep my mind off the pain. Even doing this, helping identify the vampires who had died, was better than sitting back and wallowing. “What will I have to do?” I gripped his hand, as he held mine, and continued to look across at him.
“Nothing excess. We won’t actually have you at the Manor site.” He looked up and his eyes searched mine, trying to figure out how I felt about what he was asking of me. “All we want you to do is give us any background information you know about each vampire as they are identified.”
I sighed and bit my bottom lip.
“You don’t have to do it, you know. You can tell me no,” he told me.
“No, I can’t do that,” I assured him. “I want to do it. Although I don’t know how much help I’ll be. There were some people I didn’t know very well,” I told him honestly. My mind flashed to Claudia, then straight on to Callie, and I took an unsteady breath. On the other hand, I thought. There were some people I knew very well. I took a moment and thought about Claudia’s family. She’d walked away from them and yet I knew they deserved to know what had become of her. They deserved closure and if I could do that for them and in some ways, for her, I would.
“It doesn’t matter,” he answered. “Whatever insight you can give us will help.” He paused and took a breath of air. “I’m supposed to oversee part of what’s going on but I’m still heading the Micah mission. We’re not backing down from him, even though it appears that he’s pulled one of his many disappearing acts. Now more than ever it is important that we take him down.”
I didn’t have anything to add to that. I wanted Micah to pay for what he’d done more than anything at that point.
Logan stretched. “Actually, I’m supposed to drive over to the Manor site now and see how things are shaping up. You should stay here. Either I will, or somebody else will get you when we need your help and input.”
I glanced over at the dresser once more, thinking that’d I’d take a shower while he was gone, and my gaze settled on the silver thermos. I had a fairly good idea what was inside, and I looked towards Logan for conformation.
His eyes followed mine and he cleared his throat before he turned and looked back at me. “I thought you might need that. It’s been a long night and you’re still recovering from being bitten. Let me know if you need more and I’ll see if I can get it.” He snorted and shook his head. “It was actually easier to get than I could ever have imagined. It wasn’t difficult at all to track down a seller. Who knew blood was such a commodity,” he joked.
I small laugh escaped my lips, as he got to his feet and helped pull me to mine. If only he knew I thought. The industry was thriving, but he didn’t need to hear about that now.
“I’ll make sure I have my cell with me. Call me if you have any problems. I don’t think there will be any, but just in case. You know the number,” he said, moving towards the door.
I nodded my head. I did know his number, all the Death Walkers had been given it when we’d first started working with the hunters. That felt like a whole other life-time now. It was hard to believe that it was only a few months ago. Who would have thought things would turn out like this. I stared at Logan’s back as I followed him towards the door. Who knew we’d end up feeling the way we do about each other either. Thinking back, I think I would have laughed if someone had told me, that first day, that I’d fall in love with Logan.
He spun in the door way. “Seriously Roxi, call me. Anytime, for whatever reason, okay?” he said, hands at his side, his face hard and serious.
I shook my head, smiling at my thoughts. “Really I will. If I need too.” I doubted I would. I had to stand on my own sometime; it may as well be now. “How long do you think you’ll be gone?” I asked.
“Hopefully not long,” he smiled slowly. “I’d really like some sleep myself,” he told me, gazing longingly over my shoulder at the bed. He sighed, and flashing me another small smile, left the room.
I watched him walk down the hallway, before backing up and shutting the door behind myself. I locked it and made my way over to the dresser, picking up the thermos. I twirled it around in my hands, silently thanking Logan, before unscrewing it and taking a tiny sip. Like a wildfire, the salty taste brought warmth to me as the blood trickled down my throat. I moved and rested on the edge of the bed as I continued to drink. It was warm and thick, the best it could be, and as I drank I found my life force swell. I felt instantly better and any physical aches I had resided as I completely drained the thermos. I licked my lips afterwards and ran the back of my hand across my mouth.
I felt full and content, at least in that sense. I was far from content, although I was starting to believe I’d get there. Eventually. I just didn’t know what would happen and not knowing was horrible. I looked over at the clothes on the top of the dresser, they looked about my size. I set the thermos down on the bed, before I got up and picked up the clothes, making my way to the bathroom. A shower would do me a world of good.
