Destined - Chapter 27- The prophecy; does this mean he's gonna kill me? (chapter 28) by Rachel
description:
There’s a line between good and evil, but what happens when that line is blurred?
Roxi was a normal teenager up until two years ago when fate left her no choice but to become a vampire. Necessary for her to live; it wasn’t something she chose. Does that make her evil? Roxi doesn’t think so. With that choice taken out of her hands, she made the only one she could let herself make. She chose not to give into her nature, but to rise above it.
Despite having to hide, who and what she now is from the people who matter most, Roxi was living her life as best she could. That was until someone from her past resurfaced. Someone who wants Roxi to take a different path than the one she chose. Someone who won’t let her go.
Now Roxi is left with no choice but to work alongside her natural enemy, the very people who hunt her kind- Vampire Hunters. Embarking on a shared mission proves difficult as hunters and vampires clash. They say keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but how do you accomplish that when your enemies no doubt want you dead?
Throw in a supposed destiny that Roxi doesn’t believe in, and a hunter named Logan who may be more than he seems, life’s getting complicated. As Roxi fights to prove she’s more than the hunters think she is, Logan’s learning that not everything is black and white, and soon Roxi begins feeling things for him she knows she shouldn’t.
But when tragedy strikes and Roxi’s world is shattered, she must decide whether to give up, and lose all she is, or fight to complete the mission. Suddenly the stakes are higher, as the realisation that maintaining what’s left of her already broken world may come at a price. One that Roxi’s not sure she’s willing to pay, or even if her heart will allow her too.

Chapter 54
He walked around me and stood so that he was leaning up against the car at my side. “Start at the beginning. How did you and Father Riley meet?”
I took a breath. “Father Riley and I met almost two years ago. I’d only been a vampire for about a month.” I turned to smile dryly at Logan. “I hadn’t even met Micah at this point; I met him a few months later.” I paused. “I’d just finished my basic training and was only just being allowed to join the Death Walkers on missions. I was out with Quintenn and Claudia; actually I think Ben was there as well, and we were just finishing up vanquishing a vampire.” I looked down at my hands, intertwining my fingers, before I looked back up. “We were walking back to our car, when we passed the church. As we walked by, I heard some sort of a crashing noise and something that sounded like a muffled screaming.” I frowned. “To be perfectly honest I don’t know why none of the others heard it too, I was the only one. Father Riley believes that it was God’s will and that I was sent to him to save his life.” I shook my head. “I prefer to think of it as good timing.”
I looked at Logan beside me, directly into his blue eyes. “The moment I heard those sounds though, I don’t know what came over me. I was still new to this life, inexperienced and not fully trained. I guess my instincts must have kicked in, because before I could even stop to think what I was doing, I was running up the church steps and throwing open the door. Inside I found Father Riley being attacked by two vampires.”
I felt my temper flair. Father Riley meant a lot to me and I hated to think about what would have happened to him if I hadn’t been there. Hey, maybe it was fate, I wasn’t sure. “They had him by the throat when I arrived.” I turned away from Logan’s eyes and stared out into the church car park. “They were nothing though; even being new I was still able to vanquish them easily. They were nothing like the ones Micah is working with. These were sloppy, the lowest of the low. They hardly even put up a fight.”
Logan had been silent, taking everything in, often as he did. “So you kept in contact with him afterwards?”
I nodded. “Father Riley wasn’t badly injured; no, I got there before that. He only had a few bruises and scratches from defending himself. He put up a good fight too.” I smiled, proud of him. “He knew what I was though, I couldn’t hide that from him, he’d seen too much,” I continued. “He’s the only person outside the covenant, and of course you hunters, who know what I am.”
I paused, taking a moment. Logan waited patiently. “He’s never judged me. He understands why I am the way I am. Actually he thinks very highly of me. Sometimes higher than I think I deserve. I come to see him when I need advice or when I’m confused. And of course to seek redemption.” I added.
“You really believe in God and all that, don’t you?” Logan looked sceptical.
“Is that so hard to believe?”
He didn’t answer so I continued.
“I’m not sure what exactly I believe in. It changes. I think there’s a higher power, forces at work that we don’t always understand, if that makes sense. Sometimes I find certain things easier to believe than others.”
“Like this prophecy?” Logan hedged.
“Yes, like the prophecy.” I answered. This was the part I was dreading. My own thoughts about this were so mixed up. I honestly didn’t know exactly what I thought about it now. Not after my conversation with Father Riley. I felt very confused. And explaining it to Logan, the same guy who thought faith was rubbish and who had no beliefs what so ever, was going to be tricky. I hoped I’d get it right.
“What is it?” he asked carefully. “Can you tell me?”
I breathed out loudly; releasing all the air I had stored up in my lungs and stood up from the car. Logan watched me, but stayed where he was. I turned and looked at him. “Before I start, I want you to know how much stock I put in it. I don’t believe it. Well, not completely,” I paused. “There are parts that have come true. And as much as I’d like to ignore them I can’t.” I frowned, feeling my brows fuse together. “It’s just in my nature I guess,” I said dryly. “There are bits that people can place, although not all of it.”
I searched Logan’s face, trying to see what he thought, but it was blank. Whatever he was thinking, he wanted to keep it private for now. “Okay, I’ll take that into consideration,” he said. “Go on.”
Well, here goes, I thought. “Alright. This prophecy was supposedly written by a prophet of the Catholic Church somewhere during the 16th century. I don’t know who he was or even his name. I do know however that the prophecy is long, spanning centuries. It’s written on twelve different scrolls, each one containing a different section and event.”
“What does this have to do with you?” Logan’s eyes were dark.
“Well, the Catholic Church scattered the pieces all over the world, at different churches, for safe keeping. And there’s a piece kept here. Father Riley’s always telling me about it. You see the day I saved his life; he honestly felt that God had sent him an angel. Me, to be precise.” I shook my head, stepping closer to where Logan stood, still against the car. “I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried to convince him otherwise, that I’m a vampire and nothing more. But it hasn’t sunk in and he won’t budge from the notions he has.”
“But what does this have to do with you?” Logan asked, impatiently.
“Ah,” I held up my hand. “You said you wanted the whole story, well I’m giving you the whole story. All of it, just like you said.”
Logan narrowed his eyes at me, obviously not liking my tone. I softened it. I didn’t want to get into an argument with him. Not now. “Basically, the part of the prophecy kept here tells of a time when the world is being plunged into darkness and chaos. Darkness and chaos like it’s never seen before. People are dying and its powerful forces of evil behind it.”
“Vampires,” Logan cut in.
I smiled a tiny bit. “I guess you can look at it like that. Father Riley does. You see, he puts great faith in things like this. I don’t, and he’s always trying to find ways and evidence to convince me to feel otherwise. Especially now when....” I broke off and bit my lip.
“When, what?” Logan’s face was stiff and I could tell he was getting annoyed with me. Perfect.
“Logan, the prophecy, on the top right hand corner, there’s a crest.” I said, slowly. “The same one that’s one your dagger.”
“The Order? You think the prophet was a member of The Order?”
“Father Riley does.” I frowned. “He’s never even mentioned them before. I suppose he’s never seen the crest of The Order and therefore never made the connection before, but seeing the dagger and seeing you here.... it’s got him rattled. He believes its further proof of the prophecy’s legitimacy.”
“I, I,” Logan looked confused. “Wait, there’s more right. Something that he feels is bad, especially if it’s got him this spooked.”
“There is,” I answered, biting my lip again.
“Is this where you come in?” He raised his eyebrows in anticipation.
I nodded. “As the prophecy goes, during the time of this great pain and suffering, God sends his Angel to help restore order and basically save the world.” I paused, trying to remember. “Now, wether she succeeds or not isn’t written. What is written is that the Angel is killed at the hands of, or because of, I’m not sure, God’s greatest Warrior.
Logan still looked confused, as if he couldn’t figure out how this fit in with how Father Riley acted.
“Father Riley said that The Order were a group of hunters, known as warriors of God,” I whispered.
“Oh,” Logan said slowly. “Oh!” he said, as though realisation of what I meant finally hit him. His eyes were wide and I knew he understood. I hadn’t even had to say it out loud and yet he still understood. He ran a hand through his hair, taking a step backwards. “What makes him think that this Angel is you? Does he have any proof?”
“That it’s me? No, just what he believes. But he’s a priest Logan, and what they feel and their beliefs have a lot to do with convincing them of certain things. He doesn’t need anymore proof. To him, I’m his Angel.” I shook my head. “And like I said, some of the things that were written did happen, although not all of them. But that coupled with his faith is enough to convince him.”
“Convince him of what?” Logan’s voice was loud and strained. “That I’m going to kill you, thus preventing you from saving the world.” He shook his head, taking calming breaths. “How can he believe that?”
I stared at him. His face was starting to go red and he honestly looked angry. Angry with me or the prophecy? I didn’t know, but his reaction had me troubled.
“He’s a priest, I repeat a priest. They tend to have faith in things like that. Trust me, for two years I’ve been trying to tell him differently. There is nothing you can say to change what he believes.”
“At least you don’t believe it.” It wasn’t a question, not when he said it.
I stayed quiet.
“You don’t? Do you?” he shrieked.
I never had before, and with everything else I had going on, I found it odd that I was actually starting to look at this. More closely than I ever had before. “Believe what? That I’m an angel of God or that you’re going to kill me?”
He narrowed his eyes at me. “Either!”
I didn’t answer straight away. I searched inside myself. Through all the mixed up emotions I had for him. After all I was a vampire and he was a hunter, but did I really fear for my life? Did I ever think he’d hurt me? My head had dropped down, but as I looked up, his eyes caught and held mine. I felt my heart contract and looking at him, I knew I had my answer. “No, I don’t believe either.”
I saw his eyes twitch and the emotions behind them swirled around, so much that I couldn’t even tell what emotions they were. He looked back at me, his expression unchanging. “Good.”
