Destined - Chapter 16- Evil has a name: Micah (chapter 17) by Rachel
description:
There’s a line between good and evil, but what happens when that line is blurred?
Roxi was a normal teenager up until two years ago when fate left her no choice but to become a vampire. Necessary for her to live; it wasn’t something she chose. Does that make her evil? Roxi doesn’t think so. With that choice taken out of her hands, she made the only one she could let herself make. She chose not to give into her nature, but to rise above it.
Despite having to hide, who and what she now is from the people who matter most, Roxi was living her life as best she could. That was until someone from her past resurfaced. Someone who wants Roxi to take a different path than the one she chose. Someone who won’t let her go.
Now Roxi is left with no choice but to work alongside her natural enemy, the very people who hunt her kind- Vampire Hunters. Embarking on a shared mission proves difficult as hunters and vampires clash. They say keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but how do you accomplish that when your enemies no doubt want you dead?
Throw in a supposed destiny that Roxi doesn’t believe in, and a hunter named Logan who may be more than he seems, life’s getting complicated. As Roxi fights to prove she’s more than the hunters think she is, Logan’s learning that not everything is black and white, and soon Roxi begins feeling things for him she knows she shouldn’t.
But when tragedy strikes and Roxi’s world is shattered, she must decide whether to give up, and lose all she is, or fight to complete the mission. Suddenly the stakes are higher, as the realisation that maintaining what’s left of her already broken world may come at a price. One that Roxi’s not sure she’s willing to pay, or even if her heart will allow her too.

Chapter 54
Micah stood in the doorway of the warehouse, vampires on every side of him. He was wearing jeans and a long sleaved white shirt that made his pale skin look even paler, his shoulder length black hair was tied back with a red ribbon on his neck. Other than his powerful presence and stance he was average looking. He was an average build and average height. It was hard to believe that someone who looked as simple as he, could wield such power. And yet, as his eyes captured me, I felt my stomach drop and found myself backing up.
Micah stepped into the room and I heard everyone take a collective breath. Vampires fanned out around him. There were many vampires and as I recalled the condition of the remaining hunters I knew we were in trouble. Deep trouble.
Micah’s eyes swept the room, taking everything in, and making eye contact with each individual before settling on me. His lips curved back, showing his fangs, and he smiled at me. My legs felt heavy and I was sure I would collapse at any moment.
I took a breath; I needed to get a grip. I couldn’t show him the effect he had on me. He’d enjoy it too much.
Why hadn’t we been told he’d be here? I couldn’t believe the hunters would keep something this important from us. I know they hate us, but still....
I glanced at Logan out of the corner of my eye. He was staring at Micah, his posture stiff and his hands at his side. His mouth was a hard line. They didn’t know, I realised. They had no idea he’d be here. This surprised me. Logan had never struck me as the type to make a mistake. And entering the warehouse, not knowing who exactly was here, that was a huge mistake.
“I must say I wasn’t expecting company.” Micah was now looking at Logan, who was standing next to me. “I commend you on that young hunter. You managed to surprise me and believe me, that doesn’t happen often.”
“Micah, I presume.” Logan’s face was hard. “We’ve been looking for you for a long time.”
Micah threw his head back and laughed. “I’m sure you have. You’ve been quite a pain the last few months.”
I saw Logan’s lips twitch in satisfaction.
“However,” Micah continued, “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting.” He looked back at me and took a step towards me. “Especially you, my love.”
I watched as Logan’s eyes flicked down to me, wide and full of confusion. He said nothing, only stood up straighter.
“Stay the hell away from her!” Claudia called, stepping forward. Thankfully Ben grabbed her arm and held her back. “Don’t you touch her.”
I still said nothing, my throat felt tight.
“I hope you’ve been well” Micah continued talking to me, ignoring Claudia altogether. “I apologise for being away for so long.”
“That’s what you’re apologising for?” I asked, finally finding my voice. I very aware that every eye in the room was on us, listening to our discussion and no doubt watching my reaction. I was also hyper aware of Logan, who was so still, that I was beginning to wonder if he was okay.
“Yes, my love”
“I’m not your love” I said, anger seizing me.
“Oh, but you are Roxanne. And that is why you're coming with me, while my associates,” he indicated the other vampires in the room, “deal with you friends.” Micah took another step towards me and reached out as if to take my hand.
I froze.
Honestly, I don’t know what I was expecting or what I was going to do, but it did surprise me when Logan stepped in front of me, blocking me from Micah’s view. “I don’t think so” he said stiffly, yet still powerfully.
I saw Micah hesitate, unsure.
I stared up at Logan and I saw him glance down at me from the corner of his eye. He looked decided and sure of himself. We were out numbered and I knew if Micah was to attack us now we would all die. Yet, there he stood. Strong and proud, not showing an ounce of fear. Fear, that he would have to have been stupid not to feel. But still, it didn’t show and I found myself taking courage from that.
I lifted my chin, took a step around Logan and looked Micah in the eye. “I’m not going anywhere with you.” I worked to keep my voice strong.
Micah’s face darkened.
“Nothings changed.” I continued. “I still hate you and I still want nothing to do with you.”
“You say that but I wonder,” he was smiling again, a distorted smile “if you really mean it.”
“I mean it” I spat. “I wish you'd get it through your thick skull. You can’t have me, I will never be yours.” I could feel myself starting to get worked up.
To my side I was aware of Logan’s eyes carefully scoping out the room. Micah was not however aware. His eyes and attention were only for me, as they always were when he was near me.
“Now Roxanne, don’t be like that. I’ve missed you terribly” His voice radiated throughout the whole warehouse once more. He had a strong voice, one that commanded attention.
“Well, I haven’t missed you” I told him coldly, watching his face becoming increasingly darker. I, better than anyone, knew his temper and what it was like to be on the receiving end of it. Still, I felt the need to keep him distracted, even at my own expense. Seeing him, speaking to him was bringing back memories. Memories that I’d spent the last year and a half coming to terms with and accepting. I wasn’t’ sure how much damage being around him was going to do to me. Both mentally and emotionally. There was only so much a girl could take before she snapped.
I knew that Logan was somehow working on a plan to get us out of here and out of this mess. Micah and the vampires working for him were standing completely on one side of the room, blocking the door. If we hoped to escape, we’d have to go through them. That was going to be difficult to do, especially if we wanted to get out alive. Logan needed all the help he could get.
“Why are you here? What are you trying to accomplish?” I hedged.
“I have a vision” Micah said as he started to walk back towards the other vampires. “A vision, my love, where we no longer hide away and let hunters, not to mention your horrid covenant, dictate our lives. We will rule and everybody will bow down to us.”
He stopped in the middle of the room and took in both hunters and Death Walkers. “You think that by stalking us and forcing us underground you will silence us. You’re wrong, it won’t. It only makes us more determined.” He looked back at me and smiled. “For centuries I’ve waited for this moment. I’ve watched my brothers and sisters being slaughtered at your hands, but no more. Now is our time. We’re ready and our plan is already in motion. The wheels are turning and there is no going back.”
I saw Logan twitch and I sucked in a breath.
“No one will stand in our path.” Micah continued, his voice growing louder. “Either you stand with me, or you stand against me” he was talking to the Death Walkers in the room now. “Join us and I’ll spare your life. Come and see what I have to offer.”
I saw the Death Walkers exchange glances before, Quintenn stepped out of the shadows. “We will never work alongside you. What you speak of, it goes against what we believe. You stand for everything we’re against. You will only make our lives harder and for unnecessary reasons. We decline, and I speak for the entire covenant, when I say we would rather die than take any part in what you have planned.”
All the Death Walkers wore identical expressions and all nodded their agreement.
Micah was nodding too, thoughtfully. “Very well, I’ve offered you a very generous choice. A choice to live and you turned it down. Your fate is decided.” His gaze drifted to me. “But not yours” he told me. “Stand by my side, stand as my queen and we will rule. Together.”
I looked at him through narrowed eyes, considering how best to respond.
“Ha!” Claudia stepped right up to my side, having broken free from Ben’s hold. “She’ll never stand by you and watch you slaughter innocent people. She’ll never be with you. Surely you must know that after all this time.”
“Now, hush. I wasn’t talking to you heathen” he told Claudia angrily. “I was asking Roxanne, before I was so rudely interrupted.” Micah’s black, soulless eyes drilled into me, making my own soul feel cold.
I stared back and stood strong. “I think Claudia pretty much said everything I was going to say.”
“Are you sure? I’ll only give you the option to choose once” Micah took a step towards me, his hands at his side.
I stood still and kept my voice powerful, more powerful than I felt. “Yes, I think I’ll pass.”
As I spoke I saw Logan’s expression change. There was a look in his eyes that hadn’t been there before. It was a look of accomplishment. He saw me watching and held my gaze, his mouth pulling up at the corners. Then without moving his body in any way, he slowly trailed his eyes up to the ceiling.
Without drawing attention to myself I followed his gaze and felt my heart jump. There, along the ceiling were two support beams; much like the one that had nearly crushed us. And like that beam, they both were only being held up by rope. Cut the rope and I was sure you’d get an almost identical result and that was what Logan obviously thought too. They would come crashing down.
And Micah was standing directly underneath them.
“I must say, I am disappointed.” Micah continued, unaware of what Logan and I had just realised. “I had big plans for us Roxanne. And yet your choose to waste you life. As a Death Walker and working with hunters. Maybe you’re not the person I thought you were.”
“Does that mean you’ll leave me alone now?” I asked, hoping to keep him distracted.
He laughed. “Oh, my love. What kind of man would I be if I gave up on you that easily?”
My lips twitched, but I didn’t answer.
“You’re a smart girl. You must see the potential we have. See what I have to offer you.” Micah was so absorbed with me that he didn’t notice as Logan carefully made his way to the side of the room.
“You’re right. I do see you. All of you” I told him my voice breaking and quivering.
Micah smiled as if anticipating my response.
“I see the monster you are” I continued, watching as his face started to change. “I’ve seen what you do. I would never want to be a part of that.”
Micah’s face was outright rage and I did wonder why. It wasn’t like we hadn’t had this conversation before. He should know my response by now. He made my skin crawl and seeing him made me want to be sick. Or at least run in the other direction.
I saw his hands flexing at his side and the anger in his eyes. Anger, that was powerful and outright dangerous. “You belong to me!” he roared with such finality that it made my stomach drop. How would I ever get rid of him? “Me and no one else” he said, leaping forward.
At that exact moment Logan surged forward and slashed the ropes. The beams started to fall. “Go!” he shouted and everyone, both hunter and Death Walker, sprang into action at his command. “Get out now!”
The startled and surprised vampires cried out in confusion and anger, as everyone scattered. The beams came tumbling down and there were more than two. The one’s Logan made fall were the main support beams and as they fell, so did everything else. The entire warehouse ceiling was falling down around us.
“Come on” Claudia’s fingers scrapped my arm and she urged me forward. I glanced back and saw that the beams had, like we planned, come down on Micah. I could see that he was struggling to free himself and I felt satisfaction run through me. There was a piece of wood sticking out of his side, blood staining his lovely white shirt. Ha!
We ran towards the door as chaos erupted around us. Vampires shrieked and hissed, desperately trying to escape, like us. We stumbled over and dodged falling debris as the ceiling pieces proved to be dangerous. One fell and grazed my arm.
As we ran, I saw Logan ahead standing at the entrance, pushing people through and urging us to hurry. We were almost there. Only a few steps to go.
“Roxanne!” Micah bellowed. “Roxanne!”
I knew it was wrong and how desperately I needed to get out, but I stopped in my tracks. I turned and looked Micah once more in his eyes.
“No! Come on” Logan shouted and started yanking on my wrist, desperately trying to get me to move. Claudia had already gotten out, and he and I were the only ones left in the room. But I stood frozen.
“I will never let you go!” Micah roared from across the room, holding my gaze. His eyes dug deep inside me and I felt my heart swivel up, for I knew he meant it.
Logan, hearing Micah’s words hesitated one last moment, but with one final glance between my frozen form and Micah, pulled me out the door.
I found movement in my legs and nodding, let him pull me out of the warehouse.
I don’t know what I was letting him drag me away from. The collapsing building or Micah.........
