Banished to my mainland
by the island's hanging fog: our specter
that whispers over the bare summits
slides along the lithe pines
and whirls white
where the waves still battle the cliffs.

You are granite impenetrable.
And I only salt foam,
the spit of the ocean,
flung away on a vile wind, I know
I sting your eyes no longer.

No more do I land on your jagged shores.
I revel in my city,
electric -
exile from dry needles and eddied brooks,
a florescent flame in the starless dark.

You are left to your creaking forests, shrouded mountains,
your buzzing fields, frigid lakes bottomless and black,
harbor bells banging in the gale,
and the creeping moss,
that stifles the prints of our bodies on the leafy ground.
