The following is the final paragraph of the story, where a murderer, only recently revealed, contemplates the enormity of what he has done.
If there is a God, I am afraid He will not go easy on me.After all, I have spent my life refusing His promise of life eternal in favor of a life of transitory pleasure.Still, there is in me, a sense that a God who knows all things will know this about me.That I have loved as few others, this world he has created. That I have stood as if transfixed before the singular beauty of every plant or animal or rock He has placed upon it,and have cherished every man and woman and child I have met along the way.And even if I have misjudged my place---been guilty of the sin of Pride----sought to create a world of my own as every artist does---then I have done so only in imitatation of Him,who they say has created us all.
