Slimy yet crumbly. That's how the bread felt. I was picking at my bread with my fingers, not eating it becuase it was moldy and old. I broke a part off and relectantly put it in my mouth. I gagged and spit out the bread. It tasted wet and crumbly but hard and chewy. It was revolting.
But now I was wondering where my mother was. She was supposed to do the shopping yesterday like usual. Every Sunday once a month she is suposed to go shopping with her paycheck. It was scanty but it was enough. Now a days, all she would buy was alcohol, so I do the shopping.
But yesterday I sent her out. I calmed down again as I realized that it was not uncommon that she wasn't home. She was gone for long periods of time now a days.
I sighed and got up my stomach rumbling like a thunderstorm waiting to happen, and grabbed my backpack. Not wanting to be late for school I bolted out of the wooden door hanging on only by it's hinges.
It fell off completely when I ran out and I hesitated over it not sure what to do. Then I just continued to run. The school was pretty far away but I made it in 7 minutes due to the fact that I am very athletic and fast.
I walked over to one of the benches and noticed that Lucas Titlle looked over at me and than back to his friends.
I blushed and hurried over to the bench as fast as I could. For as long as I can remember, I've had a crush on Lucas Tittle. I began to daydream.
I shook my head and cleared my thoughts just as the first bell rang indicating that the school doors were open but we still had ten minutes till school started.
I got up and walked over to the door stopping to look at my reflection in a puddle from last nights rain. I hadn't looked at myself since 2 nights back scince we had no mirrors in my house and it hadn't rained yet. My family (well, just mother and I) would be considerd poor to the neares drop. The only reason I was wearing clothes would be becuase I had a part-time job at the mall working as a cashier at a sporting good store. That's why I have to use rain puddles to look at my reflection.
My black wavy hair was decent enough. My face didn't look to dirty. I had very pale skin and there was a big contrast between my hair and face.
"Tyler Minlay, get in here this minute!" The annoyed drawl of of Mrs.Bingle the secretary called. "Did you not here the last bell ring? Huury up!" she called. Lucas was holding the door out for me.
I hurried to the door and melted as Lucas smiled at me and said, "No need to hurry, I'll wait. It's okay."
I hurried anyway and looked at him while going through the door. Our eyes connected and I blushed and looked away. I noticed a little to late the sarcasm in his voice and eyes, and I felt a little emberassed and hurt. But by then I was already in class.
