I knew that if someone watched us now, we would look so cliche, but that was how we had always been. We had an old house with two rocking chairs on the wooden deck. We sat there with coffee as we watched the morning sky.
"Your still not sick of me yet, are you?" Daniel asked in his aged, wheezing voice.
"Never," I murmured. Our two withered hands were clasped around each others.
The morning air was crisp, but we never missed out on our traditions. It may be Christmas morning, but the children can wait. I could hear them sitting impatiently in the living room. We both stood up shakily as me made our way back inside. Our three children were sitting with their coffee as their little ones were inching closer and closer to the tree. Thier spouses were joining in the conversations.
"Mom, can we open the presents yet?"
"I thought the kids were going first?" Daniel laughed. "Sarah, honey, you can go ahead and open one."
We sat in our love seat, watching everyone open presents. An hour later and the floor was carpeted in wrapping paper.
"Melaine, there's one more here for you," Daniel said with a smile he's worn for seventy five years.
"Daniel," I complained.
He handed me a heavy box. I pulled off the ribbon slowly and tore the paper off like a child. A large photo album sat in my hands. In the cover was a withered rose pressed behind a piece of glass. Above it said 'Forever and Always'. I opened to the first page. It had us as babies, lying next to each other in a crib. The next had us on our first day of preschool. As the pages progressed, so did our ages. Tears were welling in my eyes as I saw the picture of Jonathan, Daniel and I on prom night when I was only fifteen.
"Grandma, you were so pretty," Sara said.
"Was? She still is," Daniel laughed.
I turned the page and the tears fell over. They were spilling down my cheeks as I laughed. The picture was the one of Daniel and I on prom night. Just the two of us. My head on his chest, his arm around my waist.
The last one was a picture of us on out wedding day. Danile looked so stunning. Nothing mattered that day except being able to say that we could never be separated. I remeber how he proposed to me on the night of our graduation. We were married after we both graduated college.
"I love you," he murmured in my ear.
"Forever and Always," I sobbed.
