(DANIEL:point of view)
I ran out to the play ground with Jonathon; one of the friends that I have made through school. Although right now, I was a little ticked off at him.
"Okay, but that doesn't explain why you hang out with her. She's a girl!"
"She's my best friend. Why isn't that a good reason to hang out with her?" I was glaring now.
"But she is a girl! They wear lip gloss and dresses. We are BOYS. We are DIFFERENT!"
"Hey Daniel!" A familiar voice called to me from across the playground. Melanie came running over.
"Hi Mel," I said when she was closer. She immediately jumped onto the monkey bars to hang upside down. She was tucking her shirt into her shorts as her hair hung down. Jonathon was standing with his arms folded across his chest.
"Melanie!" A high pitched girl came running over with a big pink bow in her hair.
I saw Melanie roll her eyes as she climbed down. The little girl came over to her with a cautious smile to me.
"Julie and Anna want to play jump rope over there. Do you wanna play?"
"Hey Daniel!" someone called my attention. "Up for some football?"
"Yeah, hey, Mel, you wanna come?" I could hear Jonathan groan as he headed over to Tommy.
"Yeah! Sorry Sarah!" she shouted as she ran with me to the empty field.
Jonathan, Melanie, and I were on a team against Tommy, Carlos, and David. The game started off fine. Melanie and I were unstoppable. I passed her the ball as she averted the oncoming people. She was always the fastest when we raced. She dove into out invisible goal. Jonathan and I cheered as she threw the ball back to me. Every now and then we would pass to Jonathan to give him his chance.
I passed the ball to Melanie and she ran faster than ever. Suddenly, Tommy went and dove into her, throwing her against the chain-link fence. Everyone who was watching gasped. Teachers were headed towards us with frantic looks. I ran over to them as Tommy stumbled up off the ground.
Her arm was shoved under the fence in an akward position. I could see that she was about to cry. She tried hard to keep them away, but they slipped. She started crying, keeping her sobbing to a minumum.
"See, girls cry! That's why they shouldn't play with us!" Jonathan threw down the football and stomped away.
Melanie's face grew red with embarrasment. Teachers were surrounding her, carfully pulling her arm out from under the fence. She bit her lip to hide the crying.
"I can't move it," she muttered.
"Will she be okay?" I asked.
"She probably just broke it, but she'll be fine," one of the teachers soothed me.
I helped Melanie to her feet when her parents came running onto the playground.
"That was so awesome!" I whispered.
"Really? I didn't notice, I just felt it," she muttered. "Jonathan doesn't like me, does he?"
"Don't worry about him, he's an idiot!"
......
"That is the coolest cast ever!" I said excitedly. She turned her blue cast over to get a good view of the stitches that were just above the cast.
"I can't believe that doctor tried to give me a pink one!"
I laughed at her expression. "Can I sign it?"
"Yeah!"
I picked up a permanent marker and wrote 'DANIEL' in large letters across her arm.
"Kids are going to think I named my arm, idiot!" I laughed.
"How am I the idiot? You're the one who named your arm."
I stayed in her room until my mom carried me out after I fell asleep. I do remember Melanie being asleep and whacking her arm around, hitting my head. That woke me up alright. We laughed for several minutes until our stomachs hurt so bad we couldn't talk.
"Goodnight, I'll see you at school," I said before leaving.
"Goodnight."
