Ansella watched as her daughter crossed the Promenade to the Lovers’ Temple, the security detail following a few steps behind. She sighed and turned to the steps of the Hearth, then climbed toward her first meeting with Ibbit in almost two years. To be sure, they wouldn’t be left alone, but they would finally be together.
Why was she so apprehensive, then, she wondered--even nauseated. She’d thrown up that very morning, and had barely been able to choke down breakfast. She should have been springing up the steps with joy, but instead, she took each one deliberately until she reached the top. Just inside the portico stood Eldest Sister Imvalda, tall and twiglike, and the Sister’s Embodiment, a gentle, plump woman named Sarra. Ansella bowed to each, her forehead touching the backs of their hands; they raised her up, and both kissed her on the cheek before leading her inside.
Imvalda put her arm through Ansella’s as they walked through the Temple’s public hall, past the Hearth into the private cloister. “How are you, my dear? You look a bit pale. Are you well?”
Ansella smiled. “I’m fine, thank you, Eldest Sister. I suppose I’m a bit--nervous.”
On her other side, Sarra nodded. “Understandable. It’s been some time since you’ve seen Ibbit, hasn’t it.”
