The next few days were a blur. Nothing seemed real. Ian never talked to me again, mostly because I hardly ever saw him. It was clear that he was an Honors student. I sat in my desk staring at my homework without a clue of how to do it because I was composing songs in my head during the lesson.
Lunch was never a big thing as it is for some people. Mostly, I sit down on the lawn with my sack. Today was the same as always.
The oak tree I sat under was changing colors for fall. Each leaf had the finest yellow tint within their green.
My orchestra binder was open in my lap. I scanned the sheet music we were given that day, fingering the notes as I went. It was for our annual Fall Festival. Seems easy enough.
“What are you looking at?” someone asked. It was Ian, walking towards me.
“Oh nothing,” I said quickly, turning strawberry red as I spoke. “Just some stuff we went over in class.”
“Jennifer,” he paused, “do you want to play a duet with me?”
