Chapter 1: In Medias Res
Marsha could never tell who was driving. Her mornings were a constant blur of a broken city at the break of dawn. "Albany, what happened?"
Marshall was always quick with his commentary. The other drivers may not see him, but Marsha always hears his cynical wit, "Fuck Albany."
Marsha rarely smiled, but today, she allowed herself at one of Marshall's outbursts. "I think time beat you to it." "Good god, a joke?"
"It was worth a chuckle. You want to hear one? You don't even exist, and I'm laughing at your jokes. The other drivers must think I'm nuts".
The broken bug sputtered as the light turned red. The cramped car, filled with silence, felt more like a coffin today than usual.
The traffic light swings from its keeper like a wayward lantern, almost as if the light was showing Marsha which way to go.
