There is a simple red tree near my door
who bends its aching arms, the hopeless drifters
that curving seek to slip the squared confines
of creeping shade—trembling leaves, more
that can be reliably numbered, give whispers
(little death rattles) and grasp and pull impossibly
against the branches—they reach: to be
named at last with the escaped upon the peat
below; to tenderly cradle the freeing (elusive lines
impossible to hold) light; in escaping to beat
the gripping claws of all that do nothing else but lie.
Though my mind is silent, my heart screams, Fly!
