I was riding the local bus home from school after watching the school play. The bus driver was generous and asked each and every kid where their house was so he could plan out his route. Bad thing is I know instantly that I'm the farthest away; I'm not even supposed to be in this schooI because I'm out of area. So, I got to sit in the bus and feel it stop every two minutes and hear various good byes before I even got close to my home. It was late too so I almost fell asleep with the rhythm of the bus. I didn't notice what was going on.
Soon I was awaken. "Miss, wake up." The bus driver shook me. My eyelids fluttered as I tried to adjust to the strange light. "We're at your stop."
"What?" I groaned and sat up, realizing where I was after that nap. "Oh. Okay." I took my notebook and pen (the only items I had brought not counting the play program) and walked out of the bus door. That's when I noticed I wasn't at home.
"Sir!" I turned back to stop him before he drove off but he was gone. My legs shook as a strange cold breeze nipped at my legs. Dark trees towered over my head and dark green grass covered the ground below me. No pavement, not even where the bus had driven, was in sight. I walked below the trees and felt dew cling to my feet. The only sound I could hear was my own breathing.
Now you can see why I was so scared. I mean what kind of bus disappears unannounced? Not the Magic School Bus. I walked blindly along the waterlogged ground aimlessly, just kind of looking for a landmark. I was out of luck because I can't see in the dark either. Mist clung to my glasses and no matter how many times I wiped them off they kept getting wet and harder to see though. I forgot how long I was there wandering like a lost puppy. I was too busy concentrating on seeing straight to count the seconds I had been there. That's when I stepped on something. A piercing scream left my lips as I felt the squishy substance under me.
"Ow watch it!" A voice said. I covered my mouth so I didn't scream again. The squishy thing under me stood up and faced me. It was a boy about my age with brown shaggy hair and bright green eyes. His skin was flawless and pale, also hampered with dew and his expression was angry probably from me stepping on him.
"Oh! I-I'm sorry." I bit my lip after uttering those words.
The boy sighed, frustrated. "Just watch where you put your feet next time!"
"B-but I can't really see where I'm going." I told him.
He rolled his eyes and folded his arms. "Well you can see the ground right? It's not hard to see someone like me trying to sleep on the ground."
"Sorry don't get all huffy at me."
The boy's eyes grew as he looked at me in my blue pants and golden yellow shirt. His face was kind of weird...like he'd never seen someone like me before. It took me a bit to realize he probably hadn't. His eyes moved like spinning disks, shedding different shades of green onto my white tennis shoes. "Um..."
"Your not from around here, huh?" His eyes turned dark green.
"No. Some idiot dropped me off here on my way home."
He shuddered, probably from the cold. "Oh crap...that's not good not good at all."
"Why?"
His frown deepened as his eyes turned a forest green. "Run. Run far, far away! Your in danger!"
"What?" I hollered. "How can I be in danger!?"
"Humans aren't supposed to be here! At all! If Camarilla finds you..."
"Cama-who?"
He bit his lip and grabbed my hand. "I'll tell you everything. First of all, my name is Frederik. I'm a forest spirit."
"Nice to meet you!"
"No, not nice to meet me!" He hissed. "This is a different world than your used to! You being here is not a good thing."
"Why?"
"One word-Camarilla. She rules this place and she's corrupt! She hates humans! Any human who's ever wandered into here hasn't come out alive."
Chills went down my spine. I sure hoped he wasn't messing with my mind. "What do you mean by that?"
"Camarilla usually kills them." His eyes changed to a shade of marbled dark and light green. "From the rumor I've heard she eats them, bones and all."
"Oh gross! Cannibalism."
"NO! She's not human! But she's not a spirit either! No one knows what she is. All we know is that she controls darkness and blood is her fuel."
"Like a vampire?"
He scrunched up his nose. "What in world's name is that?"
"Never mind..." I sighed. This was very unnerving. "So she drinks blood?"
He nodded. "And flesh. Remember this is a rumor I've heard. Not saying it's set in stone truth." He squeezed my hand and began leading me though the dark trees. "But I know that every year her servant brings a human into the world just for her to eat, if that's what she does with you guys. It's usually around the changing of the colors in the human world."
"Ch-changing of the colors?" I felt myself trembling. "Like leaves changing colors?"
"I guess..."
"Th-that's happening in my world right now!"
He looked at me with the widest eyes I'd ever seen. "Then AVOID her! You're the sacrifice! She'll kill you! Eat your flesh! Drink your blood! Snack on your bones!"
"STOP! That is too gruesome to think about!" I yanked out of his hand and stared at him.
"But it might happen!"
"I don't want it to happen! I just want to get home!"
"Then RUN! Run until your feet fall off for world's sakes!"
"But where do I run!? I stepped on you remember? You expect me to run when I can't even see a you lying on the ground?"
He grabbed my hand again angrily. "Just run. You'll find your way home eventually. This world is connected to yours. If you could get in you could get out just as easily."
This was just too much. How was I supposed to get out of a world I didn't even know how I got into without dying? "I don't want to run!"
"You don't have any other choice." Frederik gave me a worried look. "Just go."
I felt a lump in my throat and swallowed it. I let go of his pale warm hand and bolted. I took his advice and ran until I felt my feet were going to fall off any moment. The droning of the quiet forest make my ears ring as I leaned against a tree to rest. My own sweat was falling onto my shoes and sticking to the tree. I smelled like a pigpen or worse. I couldn't wait to get home and take a shower so I didn't smell like I haven't bathed in three thousand years. I tried to catch my breath and parch my dry throat with my own spittle. It was better than trying to get sap from a tree or something else weird. I fell down on my bottom in exhaustion forgetting about who I was running from.
I heard a twig snap behind me and perked up. My eyes widened in a frail attempt to see in the dark better. I slowly stood up, shaking. Someone was there; I knew it.
"Hello?" I whispered. Yeah, like someone was going to answer me. It was a big boost to my morale. "Pst! Hello? Frederik? Anyone?"
"Frederik?" An icy voice laughed. "That little spirit?"
I froze. That was not Frederik. A cold breeze embraced me as I stood there like a stone statue, quivering in fright. "Wh-who's there?"
It, whatever it was, didn't answer. I quivered and bit my lip. All at once, a dark silhouette jumped in front of me, shiny silvery blades flashing in front of my face. A bloodcurdling scream left my throat and ceased as one of the blades pressed against my neck. I knew right away just by the cold touch of the dry finger on my neck that this was Camarilla. She had found me. Her black hair hung in front of my face, brushing against my skin and making goose bumps rise on my arm. I saw her teeth glistening like a vampires in the cold darkness. Her slanted sloped eyes stared at me happily shining silver. Clammy sweat trickled down my brow and I screamed again. The blade she held to my neck cut in deeper; warm blood trickling down my neck.
"I've been waiting for you human." She hissed. The next thing I knew she was gone.
"Ranelle....Ranelle honey wake up." A voice cooed. I opened my eyes in confusion. Where was I? I no longer felt a cold breeze around me or anything like that. I felt soft fabric under my body and the warm heat of the heater roasting my frozen limbs. Groggily, I looked around. I was in my room, my pictures lining the walls so much that it looked like drywall wasn't even there. I could hear the heater working and the sounds of the television coming from my sister's room next door.
"Oh honey." I looked up at my mother who was leaning over me. "Thank goodness!"
"Wha-what happened?"
"We got a call from the hospital that someone had found you lying on the sidewalk near the park. I came over immediately. Apparently you were bleeding badly and they had to give you blood."
"No...Mom that's not what I mean. Am I still alive?"
"Of course honey." She smiled. "Let me get you something to eat. You want a bowl of rice?"
"Um...yes please."
My mom nodded and walked out of my room. I was still confused. Was all of that a dream? Did I just get hit by a car? Was all of that a hallucination? I'm here to tell you it really happened. But not like Frederik had thought it would. I wasn't dead or being eaten by a black hared thing who had social problems with humans. I had something different. I sat up in my bed and gasped as I saw my newly grafted wings.
