I press fingers to eye and see
eventual stars, light
created by nerves
that refuse to let me sleep.
Unable to sleep, I write
love letters to lovers whose names
I have never spoken.
The mailman pulls the blanket
up to my chin. The shotgun
in the closet sings
songs my grandfather taught me.
