short days. shaded days.
the clock balked last weekend.
the night lets herself in so much sooner now
and it is cold. he has trouble leaving bed
each time he returns to it throughout the day.
the sheets invite him to rest, to sleep
to be buried. some days
he does not rise.

he dreams of the beach.
he is six, with a sun pink face and skin dusted with sand.
it is unbearably bright. a dog barks. waves wash his feet.
children laugh. a kite. the laughter is his own.
this is being alive.

he is older now, cheek against a cool pillow case.
night has fallen and the waves
through an open window beat out her rhythm,
this long, slow, and labored march.

awake in this silent house he listens as the kitchen clock
taps, taps second after second after second away.
