A Leaf
By Stacy Bryant
“oh…no…oh…no”
The little leaf was being tossed down the cold black earth at a speed that was unbeknownst to it before. Its normally sedentary life had been turned upside down only moments ago and had been an out of control downhill whirlwind of pain ever since.
“What is this… oh…. What is this”
It had been in the tree its whole life, but after one strong gust of wind it was ripped from its peaceful home and the horrific journey had begun. Even now it was tumbling down the black hard expanse. Each hop and bump along the expanse sent a shudder of agony up its stem.
“oh…help…oh…help”
The leaf didn’t know where it was; where the tree was. It wanted back to the tree. It wanted to be safe and protected from this black expanse that continued to hurt it; over and over.
“Please stop… please stop”
The pain was beginning to be too much. The tumbling was unbearable, and the leaf could not see where it had just come from or see where it was going. It was tumbling through the black expanse blind.
“no…more…no…more”
The leaf could no longer think. Each painful hop and jump along the black expanse no longer registered in its battered mind, because it was pain, it knew nothing but pain, felt nothing but pain, and had given up all hope.
“…”
The wind was back again. Through the strong haze of pain the Leaf could feel that alone. It blew along its stem and the leaf allowed itself to feel a small amount of comfort. But the comfort lasted only momentarily then the pain returned, but this time the leaf knew that if it endured the pain the wind would come along and soothe it once more.
“I’m… done…I’m…done”
The leaf endured this day after day for seven days straight until one day it knew it could go no further. The wind still soothed the leaf but the pain had grown so much that the leaf needed more than the wind could give. It longed to sail away with the wind and end the pain once and for all, but the leaf continued to tumble along the black expanse.
“Thank you…Thank you
The leaf had stopped. The wind was gone and the leaf rested upon the black expanse, but the pain had not stopped; the leaf still felt it along its entire stem. The leaf lay there in pain no longer tumbling but still hurting. Finally it began to go numb the pain grew to nothingness. The leaf knew it was there but could no longer feel it. Then the wind returned. The leaf heard it like a roaring inside and outside its body. The wind covered the leaf like a blanket. It scooped up the tiny battered leaf like it weighed nothing at all and the leaf was lifted into the air. The leaf’s sight returned and it no longer felt any pain. With it’s newly returned sight the leaf could see it’s destination which looked like the branch on the tree that it fell from. It was home.
The leaf smiled.
