I walk backwards. If I follow
the darkening path and take enough
steps, I might forget this life and burst
into another where moths sing,
where ants decline to sleep because
of love, where my shadow is stuck
inside the trunk of a dying elm.
Lamps flicker in time with the trapped
mouse's heart. Somewhere overhead,
a plane slices the clouds. They fall
apart like childhood puzzles.
The engine sputters a wave.
I will not mention silos
flaming in sunlight.
