Forget-Me-Not

Pale slats of light shone through the half-closed blinds. It fell across the face of a girl staring at the ceiling. Flowers in a vase slowly swayed as a nurse bustled around the white, sterile room. She checked a clipboard, and then clicked out of the door, heels smacking the hard floor as she went.
A minute later, she walked back in, leading a boy who thanked her and then walked over to the girl’s bed. The girl stared at him vacantly. “Who are you?” she asked, turning her head weakly.
The boy smiled. He spoke gently to the girl as he arranged the pale blue flowers in the vase, adding a new one as he did. “I wanted to keep you some company. It’s good that you finally woke up.” He pulled a chair over and sat down by her. “If you want, I’ll tell you a story.”
She was silent a moment and then said softly, “Yeah. I’d like that.”
