The Dream

The hat goes scuttling by 
At the height of your hip
a gray cloud over the child’s head
drowning him in the desert 
wings so wet he cannot takeoff
reaching for your delicate ghost
breathing disappointment 
a fragile hope tearing beneath your feet
the silent cry of a dead oak in your ear
as your head strikes the wooden floor
