If heaven sent me an angel
I would pluck the feathers from the angel’s wings
Until the bones bared only sinew and the flecked maroon of oxidized blood
The angel would, I imagine, be on its knees bottom lip twitching, knuckles of fists grinding into the floor, sweat beading down from its brow furrowed from a pain which must be similar to tearing out fingernails or wrenching out teeth.
I would wrap the dead wings with bandages and Neosporin, hand the angel some pain pills and tuck the angel gently into bed, belly first. I would wait till the angel fell asleep and then tip toe out of the room turn the lights out and quietly close the door. Feeling lighter than air with a heaven sent angel stuck forever at my side.
