The air outside was humid and sticky. I could feel the thickness around me as we started into a run just as the door thumped open again and quick steps echoed behind us. I thought my heart was racing before but now it was thundering as we made a right turn out of the alley and down to the next structure.

I didn’t spend much time in this part of town. All that was down here were old abandoned and deserted buildings with a couple of almost forgotten businesses peppered in between. I was crazy to venture out here at night. And here I was in a situation that would terrorize my dreams from now until Christmas.

Continuing at a run, we turned another corner and zigzagged around several streets before coming to another alley. My companion or kidnapper, if you will, stopped and pressed me up against the edge of the brick wall. He turned to look covertly around the corner. As he moved his body away, his suit coat swung open and I saw he had a holstered gun inside.

This really couldn’t be happening to me. It was just my over active imagination at work again after watching one too many episodes of those crime/drama shows. Darn those DVDs. But it wasn’t my imagination. This really was happening. I could just envision my tombstone in the cemetery – “Here lies Juliet Truesdale.” I was going to die – here in this alley. This is where I will breathe my last breath. This is where the police will find my body and my poor mother will have to come identify my remains. Oh good Lord, mother! My eyes flew wide open.
