I used to be a mountain.
broken down over time by glaciers, moving as slowly as tortoises.
I broke off, a huge boulder, and tumbled toward the water the glaciers left over.
Decades passed with the waves lapping at me,
sometimes gently, barely caressing me, sometimes pummeling me with the force of hammers.
Wind and rain and snow pock marked the top of me, and the lake eroded the bottom of me.
Soon I was no longer a boulder, I was just a round rock stuck in the sand.
But the waves were unrelenting…still washing over me, day and night, still whittling away at my size…as
slowly and as constantly as the glaciers from long long ago.
After awhile I let go of my hold and tumbled with the waves, back and forth across the coarse sand.
The sand scraped me, smoothed me, shrank me.
I became a pebble… I was once a huge mountain, but I became a pebble.
Tossed about with the tides.
When I was still a rock, a boy and a girl came along, and he used me to teach her how to skip rocks. Oh,
what fun it was to bounce along the tops of the waves. But then I sank to the bottom and they were
gone.
The waves still washed over me, rolling me back to the shore.
And there I lay, being ever slowly, ever constantly rubbed away by the sand and years.
A mountain, a boulder, a rock, a pebble…
soon I will be a grain of sand, nestled with so many other grains of sand that were once mighty
mountains.
