The substitute bus driver, who will never truly be in love (but for three times in his life will reach close approximations thereof), was once in love with his dentist's hygienist, Clair.

Wanting to impress her with the cleanest and most plaque-free teeth possible, the substitute bus driver began seeing another dentist, in addition to Clair's dentist, scheduling a cleaning with this new office two hours before each appointment with Clair's office. The intrigue worked to great effect for the next six visits, spread out over a three year period. Clair was repeatedly impressed with the cleanliness of the substitute bus driver’s mouth, showering him with praise and astonishment while he reclined in the padded, vinyl chair. Clair would always pause to behold the immaculate mouth, the reflection of his sparkling maxillary central incisors in her eyes, her own mouth in a full smile under the sanitary paper mask. Twenty minutes later, he would emerge from the chair, woozy from being so near to the woman of his dreams, and probably also from the inordinate exposure to fluoride.

Only once did the substitute bus driver nearly spoil the arrangement when, in a hurry to see the lovely Clair, he left the first dentist's office with the powder blue paper bib still clipped around his neck. Clair, who at the time was mired in a messy court case involving the intellectual property rights to Melor Molar -- the popular Russian cartoon spokesperson for Cavity Cruncher breakfast cereal -- was confused to see the substitute bus driver in the chair with a paper bib already on. However, owing to her preoccupation with the cartoon tooth, she dismissed it as her own absent-minded oversight.

It wasn't until that fateful day when -- owing to a dental emergency involving braces and a candy apple -- the substitute bus driver’s pre-cleaning dentist’s office called to reschedule his appointment, that the charade with Clair would be sadly forced to an end.

The substitute bus driver sunk into padded vinyl chair, his jaw the harbinger of heartbreak. It is true that he had no more plaque than the average patient, but then any dentist will tell you that no amount of regular brushing and oral hygiene could compete with a professional cleaning. He opened his mouth under the high-powered, examination lamp. Clair looked into the large hole in his face, ready to make her regular appreciative pause. However, this time her sanitary paper mask remained still. She averted her eyes to an empty space on the carpet, as if trying to remember something. A lifetime seemed to pass. Eventually, the beautiful hygienist resumed movement. Her white latex-glove grabbed a dental pick, and without saying a word, began to scrape the teeth of a total stranger.
