The waves churn, blue and gray and brown
A blend of earth and sky.
The beach spreads outwards, like an empty hand.
Quicker than sandpipers, we scurry about
Scratching to fill our pails while
Our footprints are sucked back into sand.
The gulls beat their wings against the wind.
The grasses bend before it.
The timeless wind sweeps on, arranging
The beach in its own image.
We have never been here.
