Laughter. Smiles. Warmth.
There were the things that surrounded me. Glad to be together, they surrounded each other and formed a circle to share the latest tales of their lives. I sat in the couch, off to the side, and silently listened, soaking in the moment. Not used to this, I was unsure how to act.
Over the past year, I have made a slow transition. When I first became a part of this family, I was extremely shy. I rarely spoke to anyone and tried to stay in the shadows, trying to blend in with the scenery. I had been hurt too many times to easily trust people, though these ones seemed nice enough. They fed me, gave me my own room, gave me gifts, and took me to tons of fun places. Slowly, I began to come into the light. I helped with household chores, joining in on the dinnertime conversation, and giving my opinion on things.
Now, surrounded by these people who welcomed me so completely into their home and hearts, I had never felt better or been happier. The scent of dinner filled the room. Cool autumn breeze blew in through the window. Music played softly in the background. Everyone was calm, peaceful, and loving. A picture perfect family.
My aunt came out of the kitchen to let everyone know it was time to eat. We all took our seats and took turns saying what we were most thankful for. Some were funny, others were sweet, but all were true and from the heart.
When it was my turn, I didn’t answer right away. I thought back to what my life had been like before I met this family. Filled with those sad, painful memories in my mind, I looked at each and every one of those people in the eye and said, “I am thankful for this moment, and every one of them that will come in the future, because I get to spend them with you.
