ANNOCEMENT
We went to sleep without speaking a word.
My awakening was sudden. One minute I was dreaming about Hiram, and the next I was fully awake, because a stupid twig got stepped on in the surrounding forest. All I really wanted to do was to go back to sleep. Stupid instincts, I muttered under my breath. In my peripheral vision, I saw Hiram, crouched in his ready stance. I adjusted my foot work to match what he had shown me not that long ago.
Out of the forest appeared five vampires. They looked to be about me and Hiram’s age, but when you looked into their eyes you could tell that they were much older then seventeen. They were inhumanly beautiful, because they were vampires, but there was something about them that made me slightly frightened. Then I spotted it. Their eyes weren’t gold, like Hiram’s, or emerald, like mine, but more like a fire red. Four of them were dedicated followers and the one in the front was defiantly the leader. You could tell by the way they held themselves.
As I saw them, one word crossed my mind. AMBUSH!!! The leader then addressed me.
“If you don’t put up a fight, then we will not harm you.”
“What about him?” I said glancing at Hiram. The leader scoffed at him.
“I don’t like traitors.” I wasn’t sure what he meant, but he wasn’t going to let Hiram live, that was for sure. The odds didn’t look all that good, but they weren’t going to get him without a fight…even if I am very mad at him. I narrowed my eyes and glared at the leader.
“Come and get me.” I practically spit the threat out. He lunged at me. Hiram incepted him while he was still in the air, and they went diving off into the brush to fight it out.
It was me against four…great. At least they were slightly confused at first since their leader was now out of the picture. I took advantage of the situation and grabbed one of them by the leg and flung him into two of the others. The one left had now fully recovered and was in tip top shape. He dove at me, but I jumped to the side and yanked him arm out of socket like Hiram taught me. I relaxed at my victory, but he wasn’t through yet. He swung his leg through mine and made me fall to the ground. He was immediately on top of me, yanking at my hair and punching me where ever he could. Hiram had once told me that in a fight, being on bottom is the worst, and it is almost impossible to win. I was not about to fall to this follower so I took a cheap shot if you know what I mean.
It worked. He rolled off me face twisted in pain. I stamped on his face, and I strutted away from the howling man.
I crept over to the other fight between Hiram and the leader. The leader had pulled out a hidden knife and was about to stab Hiram, and all I could think was “not him…not him.” I jumped out from behind my spot and into the path of the deadly dagger.
I would like to say that my life flashed before my eyes, but really all I saw was Hiram expression of concern and fear, which it was the most important thing in my life, maybe that is what it means.
I saw the dagger plunge deep into my shoulder, I felt the golden liquid start gushing out of the wound, and I could feel the energy rapidly draining from me, but I was determined to take this leader guy down with me. I reached up, (dagger still in my shoulder), and twisted his neck. The neck broke easily for he had not tried to defend himself…he was too surprised at me popping out from nowhere.
He fell to the ground, lifeless in my hands.
I felt tears streaming down my face uncontrollably as I felt Hiram’s presence upon me. He was whispering something in a quiet voice, but I couldn’t make out any of it. He grabbed the hilt of the dagger and quickly pulled it out so as to not hurt me as much…it didn’t work. I screamed at the sudden intense pain, but my eyes were already fluttering shut from pain and exhaustion. Right before I passed out I heard him whisper something very quietly in my ear.
“Don’t worry…I’ll take care of you.”
