Against logic there is no armor like ignorance. -- Laurence J. Peter

My email box keeps filing up with messages from Christian groups which tout the “Christian response” to various issues. One told me that the “Christian response” to illegal immigration is to work to pass legislation sealing off our borders, deporting all illegal aliens, and criminally prosecuting anyone who hires one. Another told me that Barack Obama was a “baby killer”, and still another said the author “hated Clinton”.

The “Christian response” to illegal immigration is to punish poor people trying to support their families? I would have thought the Christian response would be to love illegal aliens, feed, clothe, house, and provide medical care for them. I would have thought a Christian response might read something like, "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she/With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,/ The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,/ Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,/ I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Barack Obama is a baby killer? Of course, that inflammatory statement is made in reference to his support for a woman’s right to abortion. Never mind that all three candidates who could conceivably wind up as president are pro-choice, so the issue is mute as far as this presidential election is concerned; and never mind that the president has nothing to do with abortion anyway, after all, there were just as many abortions under pro-life presidents Reagan, Bush I and Bush II as there were under pro-choice Bill Clinton. And never mind that neither McCain, Mrs. Clinton, nor Mr. Obama have ever killed any babies, unlike Moses, Joshua, and King David who slaughtered thousands.

People hate Clinton in the name of Jesus?

Aren’t we as followers of Jesus supposed to be the most loving people on the planet? Are we not to be truthful, to avoid exaggerations, unfair caricatures, and slander?

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:7,8 ESV)
