Meeting Allah at the Blue Mosque

Sunlight flickered blue and painted tiny brushstrokes of color
Across the prayer rugs, not strewn, but positioned in careful lines
Facing the front of the Blue Mosque and used for energetic prostrations
Of petition.

Walking barefoot left no footprints toward the front of another world
Where thousands of tiny bulbs tinkled chandeliers in disarray across the ceiling
Casting light creating shadows illuminating hidden spots and open spaces
For prayer.

Bodies knelt low and foreheads brushed the soft hues of rug and floor
While low murmurs of devotion echoed holy thoughts divine emotion
Endlessly repeating for the thousandth time in mindless mindful words
Of praise.

Eyes wide open shut the mind as entrance to more than just
The mingled threads and patterns woven closely meant to last for ages
Allah God almighty bestows behind the lids swollen with my tears the beauty
Of presence.
