“Well, that about takes care of your college fund,” my mother informed me while my father looked on in approval of her pronouncement.
I thought about my recent failures to make even the low honor role at Whittenhurst Middle School. Meanwhile, my parents removed the wrapping from the flat, cardboard-clad package propped against the dining room wall and revealed a disturbing portrait of two, glassy eyed 19th century girls. The girls held a red plastic comb between them and were identical, save that one of them sported the body of a full-grown chicken.
“It’s an original,” my mother grinned, “Red Comb by Margo Selski.”
“She’s a Minnesotan,” my father added gleefully.
That painting creeps me out to this day.
