The Girl
The young girl was dressed in her best black fishnets, short faded jean skirt, and a stained pink shirt with no collar. She stood on the corner and gave the men wanton glances. Most of the men walked quickly past and ignored her. A young man flashed ten fingers at her. She nodded and they walked off together.
He was well dressed, wearing grey dress pants and a coat. She took him into a building that leaned diagonally to the right, and every window broken. As she removed her clothes, she placed them in a neat pile in the corner of the room. The young man did the same.
While he enjoyed himself, the girl dreamed about having a family, money, and a home of her own. She was so caught up in her dreams, she didn’t even notice when the man finished. He dropped ten dollars beside her and left.
The girl rose, picked up the money and headed outside. She went to a public restroom, cleaned herself, and found a different corner. Over and over the same thing, a different corner, man, and building. Each time, the girl escaped the present to her dreams.
It was bound to happen. One of the men turned out to be a young undercover cop. He informed her of her rights and took her to the station to be interrogated.
"Name?"
"I don't have one."
"Parents?"
"I don't have any."
"Address?"
"No where."
"Age?"
"Not sure."
“Are you aware that you will go to jail for 6 months if you get arrested again?”
“No.”
She was placed in a cell alone; they told her it was because she was so young. The cot in the far corner was the first comfortable thing she had seen in weeks. Resting peacefully on the cot, she fell asleep. She escaped to her dreams once again.
“Sweetheart! I’m home. What’s for dinner?” says her husband as he walks though the door to their ranch style home. She looks into his handsome face, and smiles. He takes off his police badge and puts in on the lamp stand.
“I haven’t been able to start dinner yet. Timmy got sick this morning and I’ve been taking care of him all day. He’s finally asleep, though.”
“That’s okay! Is there anything in the refrigerator?”
“We have some left over pork. Potatoes are in the garage,” she replies happily, glad she has such an understanding husband.
“OK!” He steps into the garage and comes back with potatoes. He quickly peels them and starts cooking them. As the potatoes cook, he pops the pork in the microwave to reheat. He makes the salad and they sit down at the table. Dinner over, they wash the dishes.
They sit side by side and watch tv. Looking into his eyes she sees the love she’s always needed. The girl is happy and content to sit on the couch next to him. She doesn’t ever want it to end.
The girl woke with a start as the cell door opened. She looked at the young officer, who had arrested her, in the doorway. “You’re free to go, Miss.”
“Thank you,” she replied quietly. She walked past him slowly and felt his eyes on her. She left the police station thinking about the young officer who opened her cell.
The girl looked in her bag to make sure the police hadn’t taken anything. They hadn’t taken anything, but there was a note:
Meet me at the bus station at 10 o’clock tonight.
Roger
She looked around to see if anyone had seen her read the note. She knew it might be dangerous, and get her arrested again, but decided to meet the person. She might make some money. Every dollar she made would bring her that much closer to reaching her dreams.
She worked the streets awhile, at dinner at a cheap café and killed time until nearly 10:00. When she go to the bus station, the young officer, who had opened her cell door, was waiting for her. The girl say him glance around, and then approach her. He pulled out a wad of bills, and she nodded.
They went to a nearby motel. As they were getting dressed afterward, they heard police sirens near by. The officer panicked and attempted to arrest her, but before he could, the girl ran our the door. She started across the street right in front of a big Mack Truck. The sparkly green truck hit her, throwing her more then ten feet.
“Oh! Look at her darling. Isn’t she precious?” asks her husband, “She’s the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen.”
“All parents say that, dear,” she tells him with a smile. “But, you’re absolutely right.”
“I’ll never leave you little Sara,” the girl tells her baby daughter. Now, the dream doesn’t have to end. We’ll have it forever.
When the paramedics arrived she wasn’t breathing. They tried CPR on her, then the face bag, and finally the cardiac defibulater. Nothing worked. She was buried in the sunniest corner of the cemetery.
