“When I was a young man, my father left me, so I searched for my father. When I could not find my father, I searched for father figures. When all of my father figures rejected me I searched for heroes.”
“But heroes eluded me,” he told me as he fastened the strap of his bicycle helmet and mounted his bike. “Now I’m too old for fathers, father figures or heroes.”
“What now?” I asked.
“That’s simple. Now it’s time to kick ass.”
With these final words he pedaled off furiously and hit the jump cleanly, but landed jerkily. Neither of his feet were touching their pedals when he crashed into that ’72 Buick Skylark that’s always parked halfway down the block.
