Kiana Wolf is a normal junior in high school, worrying about appearance and self worth, and completely unnoticed, except by one person.
Christopher Andrews is a a new kid in school who she admires from afar, but after an incident one day, begins to irritate her as well by the way he eggs her on, as if trying to incite anger.

Only two days into their still uncertain friendship, Kiana discovers something about Christopher she never would have thought possible. And when that discovery is made, Christopher informs her with no little pleasure that she herself is no ordinary girl.

When she is thrust into a world she never knew existed and finds not all is as pleasant as it seems, she has to make decisions few humans could bear. She must learn to let herself go and realize emotions feared and repressed by humans are more than useful in this world, and only help her become who she is meant to be.

She must learn to fit in or else they will find her, and though she has few emotions and does not fully understand 'feeling', she does know one thing-she does NOT want to go back to the Compound.

Along the way, she meets a thirty-something year old ex-Irish mob member named Vince (yes I'm aware it doesn't sound like an Irish name), who takes her under his wing and attempts to teach her how to become 'normal'. Along the way of that, they develop a father-daughter relationship and he teaches her basic things like what a hobby is, how to laugh, etc.

On Earth, after leaving a Shelter run by Jieli-a peaceful race, neutral in all wars and often providing humanitarian aid- Amara runs into a Shadok youth named Taren who was banished from the Shadok mothership after killing a man on another planet and ruining the Shadok's new image of a more calm, helpful race.

But will either man be able to save Amara from herself when a terrible event tears her apart and instead of her glowing, her Dark side takes over?
