The story is based on the lives of true characters. The friendship between Mary and Elizabeth is truly extraordinary, Elizabeth being much older than Mary and of much better class. The only thing they have in common is their love of fossils. For a large part of the story Mary and Elizabeth arenot even on speaking terms, but they come true for each other in the end. Their common enemy is male scientists who donot accept women in their midst and want to claim their finds as their own and religious beliefs of the time that cannot accept the idea that God obviously created creatures that werenot perfect and therefore became extinct. The story is set in 1804, pre-Darwin.
