As this tale begins, we find that it has been a number of years since Mary left the Forest of Hands and Teeth to start a new life by the sea. It is in the village of Vista that Mary has made a new life for herself and her daughter, Gabrielle, where they tend the lighthouse and dispose of the living dead that are washed up onto the beach with the tides. This is the story of Gabrielle.

Mary has given Gabry a good life, protected by the walls that surround Vista. Gabry has family, friends, and perhaps the affection of the boy she likes. But one night, Gabry agrees to cross the Barrier with her friends, hoping to attract the attention of that boy she likes, and everything changes. Now Gabry must figure out who she really is and what she really wants. Will she choose the relative safety of her life in Vista, or will she follow Mary into the forest? Will she choose a life with her first love, Catcher, or be drawn to the mysterious Elias?

Forced to overcome her fears, Gabry will leave the safety of Vista. She will need to fight her way through the Forest of Hands and Teeth, and struggle with her growing feelings for two very different boys. She will constantly question her ability to do what is necessary, and believes that her own poor choices have led to the difficulties that her family and friends are forced to endure alongside her. Throughout the story, Gabry will grow from a young, frightened, naïve girl into strong, mature woman ready to make tough choices in order to survive a world filled with difficulty.

For readers who appreciate action-packed stories this story will not disappoint you. It will keep you on the edge of your seat with its twists and turns, and there will be death. After all, death is inevitable when it is all around you, reaching and wanting to sink its teeth into your flesh.
