Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

This is a great combination of an excellent story and an important message. I recommend the newer edition that includes a new introduction. The author confronts criticism that his style lacks depth and symbolism -- it was interesting to read the story after getting a glimpse of reactions to it in the introduction, especially since I disagree with the criticisms for the same reasons the author does. This book has all the elements of an enjoyable science fiction novel -- likable characters, interesting and innovative situations and conflicts, unique technology, and a dash of futuristic politics.
