I really connect with David Grossman's work, both fiction and non-fiction-- Yellow Wind was groundbreaking and is still relevant in its treatment of the Israeli Palestinian situation. "Someone" is an adventure story, one that would be a wonderful book for a young adult. I loved it. Elements of fantasy and Dickensian characterizations keep things moving on several planes. At its heart is a coming-of-age story (from two protagonists, one male, one female) that, I believe, would be deeply resonant to anyone going through adolescence or has a connection to someone who is. The evocations of Israel, its politics and its street culture, are rich. Some of the more fantastical and mythical aspects of the book (one subplot in particular) must surely carry allegorical weight. I'm not familiar enough with Israeli culture to understand the meaning. For me, just a great and diverting read. Couldn't put it down.
