Alana's review
Melting Stones by Tamora Pierce (Goodreads author!)
When Starns, one of the Battle Islands, experiences mysterious difficulties with dying plants and bad water, they send to Winding Circle for help. Rosethorn is sent to investigate, and Evvy and her companion Luvo accompany her (mostly to keep Evvy out of trouble). Evvy's presence turns out to be a gift from the gods, however, because it is only her power that may be able to prevent the natural disaster brewing on Starns.
I really enjoyed the full cast version of this book, and I found Pierce's choice to record the novel before releasing it in print interesting. Expensive, but well worth it. The voice actors are amazing (though there are occasional moments where regional accents or over enunciation grate on my nerves) and the story really comes to life in this format.
I figured out the great mystery pretty much from the get-go, so the first few chapters were a little slow for me, but I think they would be good for younger readers, so I don't hold that against the story.
Evvy...more
