The Fish Can Sing is by no means as brilliant and timeless as Independent People, but it is certainly wonderful in its own right. The story is slow and sometimes wanders, but the beauty of Laxness's writing is just breathtaking, and the way he tells this coming of age story that takes place in his homeland, is quite endearing and makes you wish that you were in Iceland. I wouldn't recommend this one to just anybody, unless they were fans of Laxness. It is a novel that takes some patience to get through, but is well worth it.
