The Fifth Mountain by Paulo Coelho (Goodreads author!)
Alright, so I said that Witch of Portobello was not the best book in the world in my review, and yet, I found that I was still thinking about it days later. So, perhaps it was better than I thought...
I picked up The Fifth Mountain awhile after. I am glad that I read Witch first because I may have written the author off as a Judeo-Christian propagandist otherwise. I now understand that the religion of these heros does not matter. Religion is the tool to test the conviction of these strange and provacative and main characters.
I originally found Coelho's preachy prose annoying. "Intellectuals" never like when authors attempt to give their recipes for life in an obvious fasion. Nor do we like when less important characters start speaking as if they have been rehearsing how to perfectly deliver their philosophies to just anyone on the street.
