really liked it
bookshelves: 2009-book, young-adult
Read from April 21 to 25, 2010

The only thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars is the fact that it was sort of slow to hook me at the beginning. I understand the reason--Westerfeld is setting up the world, the characters, and the alliances--but I almost lost interest. Once the story got going, it was a fun read, especially once Deryn/Dylan and Alek meet up about halfway through the book. I especially enjoy Deryn's spirit and I am impressed with Westerfeld's ability to keep his pronouns straight when writing about her/him. I really look forward to finding out what is going to happen in the next book.

Amber Good to know. I started it, but I only got about 20 pages in, and someone was waiting on it, and it wasn't hooking me. I'll try again.
