While not a complete misfire, I don't think I understand who the intended audience for this book would be. There are some definite bright spots: many of Cooper's watercolors range from pleasant to quite beautiful, and the sparse, neutral language makes for a more true-to-life experience of farm life than some sugary, less realistic takes on the same subject. The farm itself is rightfully central to the story, but the people and animals are flat and very secondary, and along with the faceless human representations, make a connection to the reader quite difficult. The abrupt ending doesn't do the book any favors, either. I would have a hard time recommending this book to many potential readers.
