Perfect Chemistry follows the story of a "perfect" girl named Brittany and her new lab partner, "bad boy" Alex Fuentes. Brittany already has the "perfect" boyfriend, and Alex knows his place in the social order - but everything is turned on its head when Brittany and Alex realize they are perfect for each other.

Basically, this story proves that it isn't what is on the outside that matters. Everybody thinks that Brittany is perfect and has the perfect family. Far from the truth - her mother is unstable, her father is never home and she has a sister who has cerebral palsy who needs to be looked after. Everybody thinks that Alex is a heartless gang-leader who cares about nothing. Untrue - he loves his mother and two little brothers, Carlos and Luis, and is only in the gang to protect them.

Eventually, Brittany and Alex grow to love each other despite the odds, culminating in shootings, beatings and brandings. Elkeles pulls no punches with the reality of life as a gang member, and just because its a love story, doesn't mean that everybody lives happily ever after.
