Raised in Hawaii, I approach books with Hawaiian settings with a great deal of trepidation. It is so easy to get it wrong, but like a moth to the flame, I can never resist the temptation, hoping that this one gets it right. Thoene tells the story of Kaiulani's growth from young girl to beloved princess with dignity and love. Her modern day partner story is sweetly sentimental without being cloying. The author's love of the islands is clearly communicated and illuminates Kaiulani's dedication to her people and her land. Christian romance is not normally my thing but I won this through the First Reads Program and enjoyed it.
