The Andromeda Strain, by Michael Crichton is a wonderfully written book. Mr. Creighton is also the writer of one of the best science fiction books ever. He was the genius behind Jurassic Park. The story is about a government satellite that was engineered for biological weapons that has run off course and landed in a small town in Arizona, surprisingly everyone except an old man have died including the investigators. The government then assembles a team called Project Wildfire to investigate the deaths; they soon realize that the killer is a deadly bacteria. They have to stop the bacteria from spreading and they need to do it fast.
I am not a big science fiction fan but I really enjoyed this book. I liked how suspenseful it was. It had little parts that were boring and slow. I am not a big science fiction fan but I really enjoyed this book. I liked how suspenseful it was. It had little parts that were boring and slow. The plot twist was excellent because you would have never seen it coming. After the scientist thought they had the virus under control and you thought the book was about to end there was suddenly an outbreak. I disliked how the characters were laid out. Most of them came out of nowhere and burs into action.
There were not many weaknesses in the novel, but when there was it was very noticeable. The biggest one was all the imagination. Now, I have no problem with a story being all fiction but when you intertwine both reality with some very fictional situations it takes you out of the book. If Mr. Creighton would have chosen between fiction and reality the novel would have been much better. Another weakness would be the characters’ actions. How their leader could only go into certain rooms while the minor characters had freedom of movement, and all this because he can not spare the extra seconds to walk or run into the other room?
Despite so many weaknesses, the novel is an action packed story. It takes you to a time before anyone knew too much about biological warfare and alien viruses. Mr. Creighton is an innovator for writing this book years before any of these subjects were researched. Anyone who enjoys an action book with science fiction mixed into the story would love this novel; all they have to do is open their mind.
