really liked it
bookshelves: mystery

5th in the Joe Pickett series.[return][return]In this episode, Joe moves out of his home range in the Bighorn mountains to take a temporary assignment in the Grand Tetons district in Jackson, Wyoming, thanks to the death of its ranger, a good friend of Joe s; the death appears to be a suicide.[return][return]Jackson is NOT an easy assignment, since multiple interests clash over the use of public lands, a favorite them of Box s. This time, development is the main issue, and the powerful forces that stand to gain a great deal of money through what they claim is appropriate use of land.[return][return]Personal danger enters into the mix when Joe is fairly sure that his friend s death has not been a suicide, but murder.[return][return]This is probably Box s best book to date in the series, mainly because he s not faced with the awkwardness of having Joe act like a normal human being in emotional situations. This time it s all action, and the book quite frankly is better off for it.[return][return]Box s writing continues to improve and his sense of locale is, as usual, superb. Lots of action and a good plot also contribute to an excellent read. Highly recommended.
