I love me my circus fiction and Water for Elephants did not disappoint. Its not a challenging book by any means, but it has a few tricks up its sleeve. Gruen set it in the middle of the depression, which justified an unlikely fully accreditted vetrinarian narrator and perfectly rigged the story for an outsider looking in - which in other circus fiction is rare. The other major difference with this book was one of the major characters was the circus's prized elephant. She played a major role in the romantic arc of the hero and heroine and unbelievably eased their way into the regular life. If you liked Geek Love, The Final Confession of Mabel Stark or Wonder When You'll Miss Me, don't miss this one!
