Once in a while I go through this kick of missing DS9. During these times, I head to the bookstore.

'The Never Ending Sacrifice' is all about Cardassia. None of the main DS9 characters are protagonists. Instead we follow a Cardassian man Rugal - adopted and raised on Bajor until he's forced to 'return' to a world which was never his.

Rugal's story begins in a fairly average manner. His struggle to live in Cardassia while his heart longs for Bajor is represented well, but it is when he becomes a man that his character becomes rich and likeable. I appreciated the author's vision of Cardassia - something I found out she's famous for - and how she really completed the idea of a planet and society that was begun in the series. For all that we heard of Cardassia in DS9, I never felt like I knew or learned anything much about it, at least as compared to Bajor.

It's a worthy read :)
