Combining Jesus with vampires is one of those hokey ideas that shouldn't work. In fact, it has been tried before with disastrous results. Yet David McAfee makes it works. He build a credible vampire secret society and blends it into the Roman occupied Jerusalem. This is a alternative history novel, a "what-if" story not to be taken seriously yet exciting and involved enough to be enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians alike. And McAfee can definitely write! There seems to be room for a sequel and this is one of the few times I finished a book and thought, "Good! There might be a sequel!".
